Today we’d like to introduce you to Denisse Lopez.
Hi Denisse, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
In the past, I’ve never been one to stick to “one job”. I was constantly bored and mostly unhappy with the jobs I’ve been in. Nothing made me happy or made me feel any type of fulfillment. I knew the 9 to 5 could never be for me. As time went on, I knew I had to make a change. Not only for me but also for my son.
I’ve always loved art. Painting, drawing, creating. I always felt complete whenever I’ve finished a project.
So, the question that would come to mind was, how can I make a living out of doing something that I loved.
Growing up, I’ve always been around tattoo artists. Eventually, I got the idea of getting into the industry. It was not an easy road. I took a job as a body piercer. Over time, I became a professional body pieceworker my way into tattooing. Then it was over from there!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely was not an easy road. Being a single mother in this type of industry was extremely difficult.
For a long time, this industry has been run by men. Getting an apprenticeship was almost impossible for me. I had to teach myself to tattoo. Had to go through financial struggles as well. Years of struggle, but I knew one day that it would lay off. And it did.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a Jack of all trades. Massage therapist, body piercer, and tattoo artist…
I believe I’m different because I chose to learn different trades. Not only have I mastered these trades, but I absolutely love what I do.
Not a lot of people can say that.
Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
I did. To have multiple incomes, this pandemic has really made it hard for a lot of people financially. I feel more than anything that it has taught me to be constantly prepared for anything.
