Rising Stars: Meet Jamie Pogue

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jamie Pogue.

Hi Jamie, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Our story mainly begins after I graduated from Ringling College of Art and Design in 2008. In the years after graduating, one of the roles I filled was that of a painting instructor. As an instructor, I gained so much confidence and experience painting in front of others. When my now wife and Event Manager, Amanda, saw that “Live Event Painting” was exploding in popularity, we both saw it as the logical next step for my career. Since live painting was fairly adjacent to what I was already doing, many of my skills as an instructor carried over to our new venture. Today, we’re both lucky enough to run Event Painting By Jamie full time in our home in Central Florida.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Since we originally started Event Painting By Jamie in Pennsylvania, one of our main challenges was relocating to our home in Central Florida. This relocation was definitely not an overnight process, especially in regards to establishing and promoting the business in a new location. It was especially difficult because Live Painting is not as widely known in Florida as it was in Pennsylvania. Of course, growing an art-related business during a pandemic has also brought its own challenges, as couples have continued to reschedule and pare down their weddings.

What do you do?
My job as a Live Painter is fairly self-explanatory. I arrive at the wedding prior to guest arrival and paint a fully realized painting throughout the duration of the event. While I wish I could say that things were that simple, there is actually a lot that goes on behind the scenes to make everything come together successfully. Amanda and I work very hard with our couples, their planners, and their families to ensure that the wedding day goes smoothly. We communicate as much as we can with our clients to ensure that we’re all on the same page in regards to each painting.

What do you specialize in? What are you known for?
On the art side, I specialize in providing detailed paintings of couples, guests, and backgrounds that capture specific moments in time. I take my cues from the lighting and color at the event to create a painting that truly feels evocative of a particular special moment.

What are you most proud of? What sets you apart from others?
I’m most proud of our ability to develop relationships with our couples- we’re so honored to be a part of their wedding journey. We feel so lucky to provide a service that’s uniquely tailored to each couple and the love they share for one another.

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
Like anyone else, we’ve learned some of our biggest lessons from our very own missteps and experiences. The biggest lesson I come back to over and over is one of patience. For instance, we may have a project or promotion that doesn’t immediately benefit us, but eventually bears fruit months, sometimes years later. Navigating the past couple years has been difficult for both myself and Amanda, but our patience and endurance has helped us grow the business into something we couldn’t have imagined three or four years ago.
