Rising Stars: Meet Kay Jackson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kay Jackson.

Hi Kay, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
As beautiful and wonderful as my life is now… This wasn’t always the case. I experienced devastating loss after losing my mother to cancer at the tender age of 16 and became a mother myself just prior to my 18th birthday. And that’s not it. I’ve lost jobs, money, friendships and went through disappointment from unmet expectations from people… So, I understand the complexity of emotions that loss can bring and how difficult it is to move through these emotions. My personal journey of healing consisted of therapy, supportive friends, and, later, clinical training in how to cope with emotional distress. The deep loss and grief of losing my mother launched my desire to assist people in healing their life after loss. My life’s purpose…… is to awaken, inspire, and teach young girls and women how to find life after loss. Even further to connect with their emotions and build a healthy relationship with themselves. Whether the loss is a death of a loved one, a divorce, a job loss, or the ending of a friendship, my heart is to guide my clients through every stage and phase of the grief and transition process. There are many stages of grief and transition. One can experience shock, denial, uncertainty, fear, anger, depression (sadness), and anxiety (worry). We experience these emotions during all loss because it is new, and we must adjust quickly – and seemingly overnight!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has been a challenge to wear so many hats as an entrepreneur. Many do not look at Therapists as a human first, and it can be challenging to juggle it all! Another struggle that comes to mind is ensuring that people have appropriate access to mental health services and to advocate for financial resources for those who may not be able to afford therapy in a private practice setting.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a mental health counselor who previously worked for 10+ years in corporate America. I specialize in helping women befriend their emotions and build a healthy relationship with themselves. I am known for providing a unique approach to emotional healing using the Internal Family Systems (IFS) modality and combating emotional overwhelm at its best! I am most proud of having the courage to start over and pursue my life’s purpose in mental health wellness. I believe what sets me apart from others is the ability to be relatable, patient, persistent and validating to my clients. I teach a new way of looking at the impact of our emotions that is powerful and free.

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
There are a few things that make me happy! I am most happy when I am practicing what I preach and attending to my own mental health needs and showing up as the best version of myself today. It’s important to not just heal others but work on your own healing. What also makes me happy is seeing people transform their lives. I always say that I am just the facilitator of healing and in fact, my clients do the work by implementing the tools and it makes me feel such a great reward for being apart of their process. When I see the transformation, I know their lives will never be the same – for the better!
