Meet Kia Divine

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kia Divine.

Hi Kia, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory
Since I was a little girl, I was inspired by art and had an eye for creating new designs. It all started withdrawing. Whenever I get new clients today, I always listen closely and ask what their vision is. I picture it in my mind and then draw it out in my sketchbook. In the past, I was the go-to person for my friends and family to decorate parties, home décor, baby showers, etc. I knew how to craft unique décor pieces, especially for my daughter’s birthdays, school projects, and class events. I was heavily into art, which led to me taking courses at Moore College of Arts & Designs in my home town of Philadelphia.

As a young single parent, it was often a struggle to attend night classes. I also worked as an Administrative Assistant during the day. I had several assignments for a school that required a PC — which at the time, I was not able to afford — so I spent many late nights at school on the computer finishing designs. I also wasn’t spending as much time with my daughter, so I made the hard choice of leaving the program and putting my dreams on hold. About ten years later, I got the opportunity to relocate to sunny Florida. That’s when my life changed. I started in customer service and then eventually ended up in the finance industry, which is currently my daytime occupation. I got the opportunity to use my creativity with a local independent radio station by promoting parties and decorating for their events at nightclubs.

One of the biggest events was for a show featuring world-renowned Reggae artist Beenie Man, who has a popular song with Janet Jackson. This exciting experience taught me that my dreams were not over. At the beginning of my party planning journey, I collaborated with two other team members from the radio station for a few more parties. I later decided to branch off with my own brand, and that is how Kia’s Party Passions was born. My daughter is now my business partner and currently runs Kia’s Party Passions marketing, social media, and photography. I also have a small team that helps with event set up, transport, and delivery. We are a small family-owned business with plans to expand in the near future. I am looking forward to our expansion and new adventures to come!

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road, especially with the current pandemic. Covid has deeply impacted my business. When social distancing regulations were first enacted in the beginning of the pandemic, people did not have parties and events, which resulted in a decline of the party planning industry. Competition has been a slight challenge as well because there is a rising number of new local party planners. However, I feel there is room for everyone to succeed. It inspires me to think of new ways to be creative. Perseverance has kept me afloat.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
