Check Out Melanii Wright’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Melanii Wright.

Hi Melanii, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
What started out as a fun Friday night of baking with my sister, quickly turned into the discovery of a greater gift and passion God placed inside of me. From that evening forward, I started playing around with my newfound cake decorating skills and began baking for friends and family as a hobby. In 2012 I created my “Baked by Melanii” Facebook page in order to share pictures of my sweet creations.

Within a few months, I had people messaging me asking if I did events and if they could purchase cake and cupcakes from me. I didn’t launched Baked by Melanii with income being the intended goal. I launched this journey so that I may glorify God with my unique gift and to inspire my two daughters to use their gifts for the good of others. To my surprise, the reward has been so much greater as I’ve been able to not only put smiles on the faces of people who allow my sweets to be a part of their celebrations, but I’ve also been able to unlock a level of artistry and creativity that I wasn’t aware existed within me.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
This journey hasn’t been a consistently smooth road. I’ve had my share of roadblocks, detours and accidents along the way. But the beauty of struggle and adversity is that it creates character and produces perseverance. Since I have no formal or professional training in this field, I often struggled and still struggle at times with self-confidence and comparison to others. Which led to my next struggle with undervaluing and underpricing my work when it came time to charge customers. I severely undercharged for many years when I started this journey because I didn’t believe I had the right to charge what my work was worth without some sort of degree or fancy kitchen to baking out of. Another struggle I’ve dealt with is lack of marketing and networking to grow my business from where it’s been idle for some time. I think part of that is linked to the fear of growing too big too fast and the uncertainty of not being able to handle it all since I’m a one-woman show.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I specialize in creating edible works of art in the form of cake, cupcakes and cake pops. I’m known for my perfectionism and attention to details with all my creations. I want my customers to have the best I have to offer with every order. I’m most proud of my courage and willingness to attempt almost any design that has been thrown my way. I have an “I’ll figure it out” mindset and I have yet to have a moment where I haven’t figured it out and made it happen. What sets me apart from others is simply “myself”. Nobody is me and that alone sets me apart.

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
The most important lesson I’ve learned so far in this journey is the high priority of self-confidence and faith. It’s where everything stems from when it comes to starting a small business, to what risk you’re willing to take, to being true to yourself and doing what ultimately makes you feel content at the end of the day. Without self-confidence and faith, I’m unstable. I doubt myself and abilities, compare myself to others and conform to trends and other people’s way of thinking, which is counteractive to my progress as a creative and for who God has called me to be.
