Today we’d like to introduce you to Jaime Candelori.
Hi Jaime, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Dr. Candelori was born just outside of Philadelphia, PA. She took it as a personal challenge when a classmate told her that girls could not be doctors when they grew up. With the overwhelming support of her parents, her journey was set and she rarely wavered from that path, with the exception of growing up – she never wants to do that! Aging might be inevitable, but growing up is not.
After high school, she alternated living in Ohio and Pennsylvania over the next 11 years. She graduated Summa Cum Laude from Ohio Wesleyan University with a BA in Biochemistry and Pre-Medicine, along with a minor in English. She headed to University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, felt called to Pediatrics as her specialty, and was awarded the Arnold P. Gold Humanism in Medicine Award. From there, she returned to Ohio for residency at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center where she discovered her love of primary care pediatrics.
As fate would have it, residency also offered her another love – she met her husband, Dave, when they were paired together during a month-long rotation. They soon married and moved south for the reasons most people move to Florida – sunshine and warmth! A few years after settling into their new careers, they grew their family with two children, Sally and Simon, along with their adopted mutts.
During the 17 years she has lived in Florida, Dr. Candelori has been active in the community. She has served as President of the Central Florida Pediatric Society and was on their board for several years. She was on the SAC committee for her children’s elementary school. Volunteering in the community is important to her, and she currently is a member of the board of GROW Healthy Kids, a non-profit organization that focuses on keeping all children healthy and supports a network of contacts to get shoes to children in need, run clubs for kids, sports equipment to schools, and sports balls to law enforcement to make meaningful connections in their neighborhoods.
In her spare time, Dr. Candelori enjoys baking, cooking, painting, and crafting, but most importantly: being outside as much as possible – hiking with her kids and dogs, running with friends, hot yoga, and dragging her family across the country to reach her goal of a race in every state. She has completed 8 marathons and countless half-marathons, and also really enjoys triathlons! She completed her first 70.3 Ironman in June 2023; her goal is to cross-train to keep her body healthy and pain-free for many years to come!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I would not say it’s been smooth, but not too bumpy. My career had mostly been focused on learning medicine and staying up-to-date on the newest recommendations and guidelines, but starting my own business has come with exercising parts of my brain that had been dormant for many years! Teaching myself how to create a website, manage business finances, and navigating the ever-changing world of social media has been challenging but overall rewarding. Some of the bigger hiccups relate to uncovering various entities that I needed to update with my new practice information that I wasn’t even aware I had until something was uncovered. Working for a medium sized business that was purchased by a much larger corporation that had to create profiles for me with logins and passwords that I did not know.
We’ve been impressed with Swell Care for Kids LLC, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Swell Care for Kids is a membership-based micropractice with a limited patient panel size focused on access and availability. Our founding principle is personalized care for patients. We want to know you and your family and allow time to fully address your concerns and questions.
No more phone trees or waiting rooms! Once you are a member, you have access to a members-only phone line.
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
I was always driven to excel in schoolwork to realize my dream of becoming a doctor. I was social and active in sports and theater to some extent, but focused more on academics and volunteer work.
