Today we’d like to introduce you to Elaine Garavelo.
Hi Elaine, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
OISDANCE started as a vision to create a dance community that celebrates diversity, creativity, and discipline. What began as a small group of passionate dancers and families has grown into a vibrant and inclusive studio where students of all backgrounds and experience levels come to train, express themselves, and grow not just as dancers, but as individuals.
From the very beginning, our focus has been on nurturing both technical excellence and artistic expression. We believe in a holistic approach to dance education—one that builds confidence, encourages collaboration, and instills a lifelong love for the art of movement.
Over the years, we’ve expanded our programs, welcomed incredible instructors, and seen our students achieve amazing milestones—on stage, in competitions, and in their personal journeys. Today, OISDANCE continues to be a home for passionate dancers, a launchpad for future artists, and a space where every student is seen, supported, and celebrated.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
You know, it hasn’t always been easy—it’s definitely been a journey with ups and downs. One of the biggest challenges has been producing full ballet performances or large productions without the financial backing that bigger studios or companies might have. Costumes, props, and everything that goes into telling a story on stage—it adds up. And we haven’t always had sponsors or funding to lean on.
But even with that, I’m honestly so grateful. Being a small studio means I get to form real relationships with the families and the dancers. And from day one—since we started in 2016—the support from the parents has been everything. They’ve stood by us, helped us, believed in what we’re doing, and made this whole dream possible. I could never overlook that.
Of course, as an artist and educator, I’m always dreaming of creating meaningful pieces—works that really tell a story through each style of dance. But sometimes, with limited time and resources, that can be hard to prioritize. Still, it’s something I always come back to, because dance is how we speak without words.
And finally, something I’ve learned along the way is the importance of community. I’ve had the chance to connect with other studio owners, and it’s so valuable to share, support each other, and remember that we’re not alone in this. It’s not easy, but it’s worth it—and I wouldn’t trade it for anything.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a ballet teacher originally from Brazil, with a strong foundation in the Vaganova method. I opened my first dance school in the city where I was born, and later expanded to São Paulo, one of the largest cultural centers in the country. Over the years, I’ve continued to grow both as an artist and educator, studying and earning credentials in the Cuban ballet methodology, which now forms the foundation of my teaching approach. I also hold certification in Progressing Ballet Technique (PBT), which I integrate into my training programs to help dancers develop strength, alignment, and muscle memory.
Currently, I serve as the Artistic Director of the OISDANCE Company. In this role, I not only direct and choreograph but also oversee the development of our dance curriculum. One of the things I’m most proud of is creating a cohesive teaching environment where all instructors—regardless of their specific style—share a unified understanding of foundational technique. We teach with respect for each method’s history, ensuring every dancer graduates with a well-rounded, technically strong, and artistically rich dance education.
What sets my work apart is the intention behind every detail. My priority is to guide each student with integrity, helping them grow into confident, versatile dancers who are ready to “fly” into the professional dance world or wherever their dreams may lead.
Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
People can work with me in many ways—whether it’s through teaching collaborations, choreographing projects, or creating opportunities for students to perform and grow. I love partnering with others who believe in strong technique, creative expression, and building a supportive community in dance.
You can also support my work by following the journey of OISDANCE Company, sharing our performances, inviting us to new spaces, or just spreading the word about what we do. I’m always open to connecting with artists, schools, and organizations who care about training dancers with intention and heart.
At the end of the day, I believe in lifting each other up in this beautiful world of dance. If you share that passion, I’d love to connect.
