Conversations with Corrin Hallett

Today we’d like to introduce you to Corrin Hallett.

Hi Corrin, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I have always had a love for makeup. I started freelancing in 2004. I went to esthetics school in 2011 and became a Licensed Esthetician. I opened up my artistry business, Let’s MakeUp by Corrin in 2012. I did a Bridal Show here in town and my business took off. I was one of the first makeup artists in my area that focused on solely makeup artistry. I was a stay at home mom during the week of two boys and I was doing bridal makeup every weekend. In 2015 we found out we were expecting our third child the following Spring. It was then that I incorporated eyebrows into my list of services. I offered brow shape, wax, and tinting. In 2022, I decided to continue my education and became a Licensed Brow Tattoo Artist. I absolutely love what I do. I always say, if you find something you love to do you’ll never work a day in your life. When you look good, you feel good.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
On July 19, 2023 my small business took a devastating blow. I was hacked by a hacker on not only my personal Facebook page but also my business page connected to that account. It was a nightmare. He was scheduling appointments pretending to me and demanding the payment up front. He used the trust that my clients had in me to steal from them. My clients would send the payment to him and show up at my salon. I wouldn’t be there because I had no idea about the appointment to begin with. He was brazen. He didn’t care at all. He would answer the Facebook video chat on my page and state that I could do nothing to him. He told me if I wanted my pages back to get on my knees and plead to him.
It was disgusting. All of my hard work felt washed down the drain.

I went through all of the appropriate channels in an effort to have my pages restored but to no avail. Facebook refused to shut down the pages as they were “legit pages.” Yes, they were mine but they were stolen from me. After thousands of dollars lost and seven horrible months later, Facebook finally shut the pages down. I ended up closing my salon in February of 2024. I a on location for weddings and I schedule makeup for clients every week and I sublease for tattoo’s from Bodyscapes Med Spa.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a Published MakeUp Artist. With over 19 years of experience, I love doing bridal makeup. It’s such a joy to be apart of my clients special days. Being in the industry this long, I now have lifers. Lifers are the young women who started getting their makeup done for their first Homecomings at 14 years old. I would do their makeup for all their important school events. Homecomings, Prom, Senior Photos, Graduation, etc. Then their college graduations. After that, their engagement photos, bachelorette parties, and wedding. This led to maternity makeup and lastly family photos. I have watched these girls grow into beautiful young women who have created a life for themselves and lucky me I’ve had the pleasure to be apart of it. One thing that makes my heart really happy is to see their Social Media Profile Photos is a photo of when I did their makeup. I love being apart of all their major life moments knowing I helped in making them look their absolute best.
Also, I became someone that these young women can trust. Someone to talk to and vent to. To be there for them when they feel that they have no one to turn to.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I haven’t really taken a risk with my business. People consistently ask me why I haven’t expanded. Hire more artists and train them to do what I do.

I never really saw the need. There are other businesses in the area who have done that and I have seen the disasters that follow that first hand. Artists no showing a wedding. Artists showing up with dirty makeup brushes. Artists being late, etc. I love what I do and I don’t want to remove that passion by adding people who won’t treat my business the way that I would.

I know that I can depend on me. With my name being attached it, that is very important to me.
