Today we’d like to introduce you to Rupam Bhattacharjee.
Hi Rupam, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Reconnecting with Our Cultural Soul: The Vision of Ankur DFW
At Ankur DFW, we are on a heartfelt mission—to reconnect with our roots and reimagine the vibrant legacy of Indian and Bengali culture right here in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. As a forward-thinking nonprofit rooted in tradition and fueled by passion, we are proud to serve as a cultural bridge between generations, continents, and communities.
Ankur DFW isn’t just an organization—it’s a movement. A movement that celebrates the timeless richness of Bengali and Eastern Indian art, music, literature, theater, and dance while adapting to the dynamic pulse of today’s world. We believe that cultural heritage is not something to be stored away; it is to be lived, shared, and passed on with pride. Our vision is clear: to inspire future generations to cherish their identity while embracing the global stage.
Through vibrant collaborations, educational initiatives, and immersive experiences, we are creating a platform where tradition meets innovation—where stories come alive and the arts speak louder than words.
Empowering Through Action: Ankur’s Wings of Change
Ankur Utthan: Uplifting Lives, One Act of Kindness at a Time
Born from the desire to make a tangible difference, Ankur Utthan is our social welfare initiative—dedicated to transforming compassion into action. With every food drive, blood donation, park clean-up, and clothing distribution, our dedicated volunteers work to uplift lives and spark hope.
We believe in the power of community. By mobilizing our collective strength, Utthan empowers the underprivileged with tools for self-sufficiency, dignity, and a brighter tomorrow. Guided by empathy, cultural sensitivity, and grassroots engagement, we’re not just serving—we’re empowering communities to thrive.
Ankur ACT: Where Art Becomes a Catalyst for Change
Ankur ACT is where creativity meets purpose. This is our cultural powerhouse—dedicated to producing and promoting high-quality, inclusive performing arts that resonate across generations. From soul-stirring music and expressive dance to compelling theater and storytelling, ACT is a stage for voices that need to be heard.
If you’re an artist, dreamer, or believer in the transformative power of the arts—this is your home. Through events, workshops, and our annual flagship celebration, ACT~ON, we strive to: Inspire youth engagement and creativity, revive and preserve traditional Indian art forms, promote diversity, inclusion, and gender equity, educate through storytelling and shared histories, build sustainable, art-connected communities.
At Ankur ACT, we don’t just perform—we connect, empower, and spark change. We see art as a universal language, capable of nurturing empathy and shaping a more inclusive and harmonious world.
Together, through Ankur DFW, Utthan, and ACT, we’re not just preserving culture—we’re building a legacy. One that echoes across generations and geographies, illuminating the path to a more connected, compassionate, and creative future.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
When we founded this organization, we were just five-six families brought together by a shared passion. Starting a cultural non-profit like ours—dedicated to celebrating and preserving Indian and Bengali heritage through arts, music, sports, and community events—was both an ambitious and deeply meaningful journey. The impact has been real, but like any new initiative, our first few years came with their fair share of challenges.
1. Building Awareness and Visibility
At the beginning, no one knew who we were. Gaining traction and community recognition was a slow process. We started by reaching out through personal networks, connecting with people via mutual friends, and gradually building an online presence—creating a website, active social media profiles, and regular newsletters.
Our very first event, Saraswati Puja—a festival honoring the Goddess of knowledge, music, and wisdom—set the tone for what we stood for. This was followed by our flagship annual sports event. These early efforts drew in new families who immediately resonated with the warmth, mutual respect, and cultural values that Ankur brought into their lives.
2. Fundraising and Financial Stability
Like many young organizations, securing steady funding was a challenge. Most donors and sponsors wait to see tangible impact before they commit. We began with bootstrap funding—contributions from our founding families. As we grew, we introduced annual memberships to create a sense of belonging and shared investment. Our Vice President and his dedicated team took on the task of local outreach, successfully engaging donors and securing corporate sponsorships, especially from businesses within the Indian and Bengali community.
3. Year-Round Engagement
Planning and executing events consistently takes time, commitment, and resources. We started small—hosting 2 to 3 events per year—and gradually expanded our calendar as the organization matured. One of our early learnings was the importance of planning well in advance and actively involving the community in shaping event themes and formats. This helped us stay relevant and responsive to the interests of our members.
4. Clarity of Mission and Identity
One of the most common early struggles for new organizations is defining their purpose and direction. Thankfully, since Ankur was founded by a close-knit group of friends, we had a clear vision from day one. We took the time to craft a mission statement that was both meaningful and actionable. Our founding members remain deeply involved, and over time, we’ve welcomed many more like-minded individuals into our executive team. Today, Ankur is more than just an organization—it’s a happy, dedicated family, united in our commitment to a shared vision.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
By profession, I serve as a Director at an analytics firm, where I navigate the world of data-driven insights and analytics. I live in the vibrant city of McKinney, Texas, with my wonderful wife and our spirited 11-year-old son—both of whom are my greatest sources of inspiration and joy.
Beyond the world of analytics, my heart beats for something deeply personal and profoundly meaningful—Ankur. As one of the founding members and currently the General Secretary, Ankur has been more than a community organization for me—it has become a defining part of my identity and purpose. What began as a passion project has grown into a way of life.
Since moving to the Dallas, Ankur has gifted me not just a platform to celebrate and share my cultural roots, but also a family of like-minded individuals who have become my closest friends. It has taught me the art of building something from the ground up—nurturing a vision, creating structure, and inspiring community through shared culture.
Through Ankur, I’ve found the perfect balance between my professional world and my cultural soul. And I’m incredibly proud to be part of a movement that is preserving heritage, empowering lives, and shaping a brighter, more connected future.
What are your plans for the future?
What began as a small group of 5–6 families have grown into a vibrant, 250-member community in just three short years—a testament to the passion, dedication, and unity that defines Ankur. With a strong foundation in place, our focus over the next 2–3 years will shift toward sustainability, strategic growth, and creating a deeper, more lasting impact within the community. Here’s a look at some key priorities on our roadmap:
1. Deepen Community Engagement
To keep our community connected and inspired throughout the year, we aim to:
• Introduce year-round programs: Launch monthly or quarterly events such as kids’ art workshops, debate competitions, and music or dance classes.
• Expand cultural education offerings: Start structured programs like Bengali language classes, storytelling sessions, and other heritage-focused activities.
• Strengthen community outreach: Organize more frequent social service initiatives—giving back to the local community through volunteerism, drives, and support programs.
2. Enhance Financial Stability
Sustaining and expanding our efforts requires a solid financial foundation. To support more frequent and meaningful programming, we will:
• Increase fundraising efforts: Seek additional donations, community support, and sponsorships.
• Pursue grants: Apply for local arts, culture, and community development grants from organizations such as the City of Dallas, the Texas Commission on the Arts, and other foundations that support diaspora communities.
• Build corporate partnerships: Collaborate with local businesses, especially those with cultural or community ties, to support events and initiatives.
3. Plan for Long-Term Infrastructure
Looking ahead, we envision a dedicated space for Ankur—our own cultural hub. To move in that direction, we will:
• Explore venue options: Consider renting or co-sharing a community or cultural space to host regular events, classes, and gatherings.
• Assess financial feasibility: Carefully evaluate the costs and potential funding sources to ensure the sustainability of such space.
We’re excited about what lies ahead and are confident that, with collective effort and support, we can take Ankur to even greater heights.
