Meet Shurland Sealy: Capturing Life One Frame at a Time

In every community, there are artists who don’t just take pictures—they tell stories. For Orlando-based photographer Shurland Sealy, photography is more than a profession. It’s a passion rooted in family, culture, and a lifelong love for the arts.

A proud Jamaican native raised in both Brooklyn and Miami, Shurland brings the bold color and rhythm of his heritage into every shot. At 60, he combines decades of experience with a fresh, inspired eye—fueled by the storytelling legacies of Time and GQ magazines. “Those early portraits showed people as they really were—famous or not,” he says. “I aim to bring that same authenticity into my work.”

Specializing in weddings, social events, product photography, and outdoor shoots, Shurland’s approach is both personal and professional. He shoots with Canon DSLR cameras, using his lens to freeze joy, movement, and meaning in the moment—whether at a family celebration or beneath a Florida sunset. His love for music, art, and world cultures shines through his portfolio, as does his dedication to his own family.

From karaoke nights to milestone events, Shurland captures the essence of community with heart and precision. If you’re looking for a photographer who sees the beauty in every detail—and knows how to frame it—Shurland Sealy is the name to know.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My journey has been fun and filled with meeting great people and families. Creating timeless family art has opened doors to lasting friendships and allowed me to make lots of folks happy in the process.

The passion for photo came over me many years ago when I walked into a thrift shop in Apopka and found and old camera kit with a few lenses and carry bag. It was definitely not pro material and functional, at best. Still, the shutterbug was itching to come out! I began taking pictures of anything I could. I belonged to FaithWorld Church at the time, and I had many friends in Christ to whom I lovingly offered charity in the way of family and wedding photos for those who could not afford such things.

It was on one particularly beautiful spring day at New Smyrna Beach when I learned I wasn’t terrible at this calling. A young lady named Melanie married the guy of her dreams and I was able to give this newlywed couple lasting images of themselves, loved ones and family against a brilliantly sun lit sky and all the colors of the water and sand.

Thus far, I must say, the only challenge has been Covid-19. It was all so horrible. Locked away, unable to enjoy community and worst of all, the resorts and hotels I did so much work were now all closed due to the pandemic.

It has been a bit of a struggle to find and enjoy the chance to do more family photos since that time but I do hope to meet more of you and create Magic for all of Orlando and more!

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Im best described an an active photographer. Outdoor photography is more an interest of mine than any other. Capturing color and action and using natural sunlight can be so much fun. I could easily see myself in action filled environments, like a celebrity event or the scene, a night or Wrestling at a Forum or the historic grand opening, Some clients have been surprised to see my on a ladder, in a pond or even in a tree to get the best shot!

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
Mostly good luck! God has blessed me.
