Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristie Nguyen.
Hi Kristie, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
It all started back in middle school sitting in church as I pondered my future and asked God for guidance. Then I heard my calling to become an optometrist. After graduation, I contracted instead of being employed to see what my options were. Contracting allowed me to work in various settings with a flexible schedule to start a family.
One day I clicked on an application on LinkedIn and the next thing I knew I got the opportunity to lease my first office. It’s been almost 3 years since that day and I’m enjoying having my own office space. Being my own boss gives me more control in my work schedule and how to run my office.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road was relatively smooth. Being a contractor, your schedule is never the same week to week. Some employers hire for a one time fill in while others only need certain days of coverage at their office. Not knowing where you would work next can sometimes be scary. However being in Orlando, there is always a shortage of doctors needed for coverage. As long as you’re willing to be flexible it all works out.

I am proud of making each experience personal to each patient in my chair – that they leave seeing more clear than before they saw me. I love new technology and I try to incorporate that into my office which helps with efficiency and enhances the patient’s experience.
My biggest investment so far is my InMode RF & IPL machine to address dry eyes for many of my patients. Dry eyes can cause ocular discomfort but also affect vision. When your vision fluctuates throughout the day there is a high possibility you have dry eyes. Educating my patients about the different symptoms and signs helps them understand their eyes better. I also offer NuLids in office treatment, supplements, lid cleaners and eye drops to help individualize each case.
