Today we’d like to introduce you to Queen McCoy.
Queen, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I began my musical journey at the age of five when I first began playing the piano. This early exposure to music led to
my participation in church choir, middle and high school music programs, and then a pursuit of a bachelor’s degree in music at Rollins College. Around 2018, I performed a cover song in my first open mic show, and that was the catalyst that got me started on my career as a singer. Not only do I sing, but I teach piano and voice, and have been doing so alongside pursuing vocal performance. Through networking, I have made many connections that resulted in countless teaching and performance opportunities.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Nothing worth having comes easily. I have had to overcome mild performance anxiety and self doubt, but most importantly, I had to find myself. The music isn’t as impactful or meaningful without the right intention. So I had to rediscover my “why” for singing. Aside from internal struggles, there are the external struggles of working with people. You deal with people of different character, different backgrounds, and different visions than you. Learning how to navigate professional relationships can be challenging, but it’s achieved through trial, error and discernment.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
As I shared earlier, I am a singer-songwriter. I perform everything from gospel, to pop, to the national anthem; however, I am known for my raspy, soulful tone. I specialize in soul/neo-soul music, and I have written two original songs—“Nothing At All” and “Sunflower”—which are available on all streaming platforms. I am most proud of my recent opportunity to open as an artist for Music Fest Orlando 2024. I believe what sets me apart from others is my heart for music, my genuine appreciation for my gifts, and my gratitude to be a vehicle for the uplifting of people through music.
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Growing up, I was quiet, studious and pretty introverted until about age 14. I loved to read, I excelled in academics, and I was scratching the surface of finding out who I wanted to be. I always came alive with my family, and loved family gatherings, reunions, pool parties, etc. Aside from music, I participated in dance, swimming, and I was ALWAYS active in my church. (Thank God for it.) In my teenage years, I started to blossom—making friends with new people at the magnet school I attended, joining clubs, and being exposed to new opportunities.
