Today we’d like to introduce you to Dominica (the Community Knows Me As Master Roberts) Roberts.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My name is Master Dominica Roberts, I am a 5th degree Kukkiwon Certified Black Belt, and began my training in Buffalo, New York at the age of 5 under the instruction of Grandmaster Sun Ki Chong. I have over 25 years of Martial Arts experience and 15 years of professional Taekwondo teaching as a Head Master Instructor in the Taekwondo school as well as in the local community daycares and elementary schools. In my years of training, I have been a competitor and medalist in National and Organizational tournaments as well as the Junior Olympics. I hold 10 years of Demonstration Team competition experience and have served as the Head Coach of the World Class Demonstration Team. As Head Master Instructor in Buffalo NY, I was responsible for instructing and advancing over 1,000 students. In 2021 I moved to Oviedo FL to open my own Taekwondo school with my husband, Master Roberts World Class Taekwondo. As the school owner, it is my goal to provide the highest quality of Martial Arts instruction and help students gain the maximum benefit from their Martial Arts training, all while becoming impactful World Class Leaders in the Oviedo Community.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Opening a business in a brand new community knowing very little about the community and the people, is not an easy feat. Having the mentorship and guidance of our Taekwondo and Buffalo, NY family, we were encouraged to immerse ourselves into the Oviedo community. We were extremely grateful for the warmth and open arms that the community of Oviedo met us with.
Although the struggle of “figuring it all out” existed, we continued to show up day after day and learn more about the community, the people and the events. In this way, we were able to uncover the beauty of this new place we called home. Once we knew more about the stories of our community, we were able to connect through our years of martial arts training to showcase the true beauty and benefits that are to be gained from training in martial arts and how what we do can make a tremendous difference to enhance our community.
This Oviedo community really knows how to embrace and support one another and for that we are thankful, the hard truly became easy.
We’ve been impressed with Master Roberts World Class Taekwondo, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We are Master Roberts World Class Taekwondo — where our mission is to inspire, motivate and empower students to discover and tap in to their highest potential.
We teach martial arts, specifically Taekwondo, to children, teens and adults starting at age 4 in the Oviedo community and surrounding areas.
Here, we emphasize quality, personalized and enthusiastic instruction on the techniques while highlighting the value of focus, respect, and confidence. We cultivate leaders — built on the values of excellence and growth who are strong in body, mind, and character.
Whether you’re a beginner trying out something new, a parent looking to build confidence and discipline in your child, or someone seeking a positive, supportive space for personal growth — you’re in the right place, where you’re seen, valued and encouraged and where every achievement- big or small- is celebrated.
Our vision is to cultivate a home of world class leaders who contribute to a safe and peaceful community. That starts with YOU — and it starts right here.
This is more than martial arts. This is Master Roberts World Class Taekwondo.
We are always touched to see the pride of our students as they wear their Taekwondo shirts and merchandise in the community, when they drive around with our school magnet on their car or even seeing photos and videos of them showing off their moves to family and friends or during a vacation trip!
We would want readers to truly know that Taekwondo can be everything for everyone!
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
I believe the most important lesson I learned and continue to pass on to my instructors and students is something my Grandmaster said to me, which is, “To be a good teacher, you must first be a good student.”
This lesson has carried me through so many things in my life both in my Taekwondo journey and my professional journey. The understanding that there is always room to grow and the relentless pursuit to keep learning.
When this phrase echos in my ear, it encourages me to face life with a sense of curiosity and an eagerness to lean in and find out what more there is for me to learn so I can always keep bringing the best value.
When I put myself in the student role, I become a more energized learner for myself and I become a more empowering leader for others.
