Today we’d like to introduce you to Dustin Sassic.
Hi Dustin, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started in Osceola County as a paraprofessional in 2005. That same year I moved into an instructional ESE teacher position. Over the next 12 years I taught at both the elementary and middle school levels in various capacities including Math and PE. Over the years I had great mentors that taught me about education and leadership. I have now been an administrator in elementary and middle school for the last 8 years which I have gained insight into what works for students, staff and the entire school community. When the opportunity came to open a new K8 school in the Sunbridge community, I could not pass it up. We are excited to build a foundation from the ground up, and be the centerpiece in a growing community.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Nothing great doesn’t come without challenges. One of the biggest challenges we have had is the tremendous growth in such a short period of time. As we continue to grow, we must hire new highly qualified staff to ensure our students receive the best education possible. One way we continue to overcome this challenge is by creating a positive culture in which people want to work. Author and educator Anthony Muhammad explained to me that “Culture is the single most important thing when building a strong workplace” When you create a positive work environment that gives people purpose and a voice, you attract more people that are seeking that. We are a family at Voyager K8.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am the Principal of Voyager K8 in Osceola County Florida. At Voyager K8 our goal is to give students the tools and knowledge to be successful leaders in the community. We work with the Sunbridge community to ensure we have a sustainable future. I’m most proud of the way this entire school community comes together for our kids. They are the reason we do what we do. In just our first year we were able to put systems in place and provide opportunities for kids to succeed and were the #1 highest performing K8 school in Osceola County. We offer Paxton Patterson Labs, Agriculture, Band, Chorus, Art, Athletics and engaged leadership classes. Through Stephen Coveys Leader in Me framework, we build leaders using the 7 habits of highly effective people. This has led to many student led initiatives that have supported both the School and surrounding community.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
When starting something new it is important to begin with the end in mind. Have a clear purpose and set goals. Over communicate that purpose, and create relationships with the people around you and in the community that will support the goals and mission. Be excited about what you are doing and people will feed off the positive energy. Starting something new is not easy, however the work is very rewarding. When you can serve other’s and impact them in a positive way, it make’s coming to work easy every day.
