Jamila Muhammad shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Good morning Jamila, we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: Have any recent moments made you laugh or feel proud?
Winning first place for my Bourbon Pecan Pie at the National Pie Championship was a total ‘pinch me’ moment. And for a laugh — at a pop-up, a little boy took one bite of my vegan chocolate cake, gasped, and said, ‘This tastes like REAL cake!’ I’ll never forget it.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Jamila ‘Mila’ Muhammad, founder of Mila’s Front Porch — an award-winning bakery creating high-quality, allergy-friendly and traditional desserts. I started baking at farmers markets, and now I’m known for treats that feel like a hug from the first bite. I’m currently growing our catering and custom dessert offerings while working toward opening a new retail space.
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What relationship most shaped how you see yourself?
Without a doubt, my relationship with my grandmother, Nanny. She taught me that ‘nothing beats a failure but a try’ — a phrase that still guides me. Nanny encouraged my creativity in the kitchen and my determination in life. Her love, resilience, and belief in me shaped not just the baker I am, but the woman I’ve become.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Raising three girls alone while building a business — and going back to school — hasn’t been easy, but they’re my reason to keep going. I want them to see that even in hard seasons, you can push forward and make your dreams happen.
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What’s a cultural value you protect at all costs?
Respect and kindness. My grandmother taught me that how you treat people matters just as much as what you accomplish. In my kitchen and my life, I make sure everyone feels welcome, valued, and treated with care — no matter who they are or where they come from.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. If you retired tomorrow, what would your customers miss most?
I think they’d miss the personal touch — knowing that every dessert was made with love, care, and intention. My customers aren’t just buying a cake or pie, they’re getting a little piece of my story and my heart. I hope they’d also miss the joy and comfort I try to sprinkle into every interaction, whether it’s a friendly chat at pickup or a handwritten note in their box.
