Life & Work with Olivia Lauren of Orlando

Today we’d like to introduce you to Olivia Lauren.

Olivia, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
As a transgender woman, an immigrant, and also Cuban, I had to leave my country at a very young age in search of new opportunities. I was looking for better economic well-being for my family. I had the opportunity to arrive in a beautiful country that opened its doors to me: the United States of America. Although my beginnings were not easy, as I saw many doors close due to my sexual preference, I was also judged for my physical appearance. Some of my managers forced me to change my appearance because it did not fit the company’s standards. It was during those years of hard work that I found my true self. I realized that my dream was bigger and that I was pursuing more than just freedom; I wanted to live the life I dreamed of, being who I truly felt I was. I took my first steps toward my transition, opening my eyes to a new and wonderful world, thus getting to know my community. I had the opportunity to meet Carla DelVillaggio, my theater professor, who was the first person to accept me. She did not see my appearance; she saw my essence. Along the way, I met many people, including my best friend, Sofía Valencia, who showed me that to be happy, one must accept oneself. She inspired and encouraged me to achieve what my soul longed for. Since I was little, I dreamed of a modeling career, and she was the first one who believed in me. Several years had to pass for me to reach that goal because society often teaches us that beauty is a status, a standard. I was there to meet all the expectations. The Orlando International Fashion Week gave me the first opportunity to fulfill my dreams, leading to new projects. I even became the official image of Patrick Starrr’s One Size campaign, because hard work also brings rewards. Like Patrick says; Life opens up when you do. Thanks to the opportunities I have been given in life, I was able to participate in beauty pageants, where I realized that beauty is not only physical; it is also internal. Queens do not always have to be beautiful; they can be funny, humorous, but above all, they must be human and have the empathy needed to wear a crown. Something that impacted my life is being able to share this experience with my friend, an act that we will be repeating in this new adventure where we will represent our roots, our traditions, and our culture in Thailand for the prestigious Miss International Queen pageant. Sofía Valencia, Miss International Queen Honduras 2025, and I, Olivia Lauren, Miss International Queen Cuba 2025. This is to show that no matter the humble origin from which you come, we all have the right to dream.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The biggest stumbling block I have had in my life is accepting who I am. The change in identity had a significant impact on both my family and me.
