Today we’d like to introduce you to Unforsaken Women.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Unforsaken Women is a nonprofit that has been operating since 2013. Our Founder, Mo Mydlo, felt called to teach women how to renew their minds. The organization has since grown, including a thrift store Unforsaken Treasures Resale Shop. But the missions of helping women renew their mind in the Word of God and helping women and children, locally and globally remain the pillars of our work.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
No, not at all! We started with just two staff members, Mo and myself. We worked tirelessly to try to maintain all of the different outreaches and programs. There are a few families we really did our best to go above and beyond for. We poured into the moms and their children emotionally, spiritually and financially. When we exceeded the capacity for what we were able to give and told them we couldn’t fulfill a particular request, they turned on us. We know those families were hurting and desperate, but having to deal with the fallout of those relationships was hard on us. The other big struggle we’ve had is receiving enough monetary support to “keep our doors open”. Up until we launched our thrift store, we relied solely on a handful of donors (mostly friends and family). There were times when we had to delay our paychecks. Even though there were only two employees and we made a meager amount, there just wasn’t enough in the bank to cover our salaries and the ministry expenses at the same time.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
At its core, Unforsaken Women’s goal is to help women and children. We are known for helping women in need. We come alongside these families, especially single moms and widows, and provide them with resources to support them emotionally, spiritually, financially and physically. I think what makes us different from other ministries is that we do not want to simply help and say goodbye. We have a wonderful group of staff/volunteers and we want the ladies we serve to get plugged in, to make new friends, to find community with others who are in the same situation as them, to grow together.
Some of our Outreaches Events for single moms and widows include:
Angel Tree: We provide Christmas gifts for their children.
Back to School Bash: We give free school supplies, uniforms and haircuts to their children.
Benevolence: Assistance with housing or transportation costs.
Man Training: Mentorship program for their sons who do not have godly, male role models.
Restore Hope: One deserving single mom or widow is blessed with a complete home renovation each year.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
I believe the most important aspects of our success are keeping the Lord first in what we do and being servant leaders. All of our staff and volunteers love God and try to help anyone in any way we can. We aim for that love to shine through in all we do.
