Today we’d like to introduce you to Grace Lines.
Grace, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I greatly enjoyed many years as a dedicated elementary and middle school teacher during the first stages of my career. When I began my family, however, I felt it quite difficult to devote enough attention to both my own children and my students at the same time, so I put my career on hold to be a full-time mom. When my children were older and more independent, I dipped my toe back into the public school classroom, and then began tutoring students here and there (mostly friends’ children). When tutoring, I came to realize how freeing it was to have the autonomy to teach using the tried and true, research-based strategies I’d practiced during my training in my University of Florida internships and early teaching years .
During and after the pandemic, the demand for one-on-one tutoring for students not thriving with online learning was immense. This is when I decided it was time to incorporate my tutoring business. It’s now abundantly clear how difficult this time period (and its reverberations) were and still are for so many young people.
I strongly believe a tremendous amount of academic progress can be made in even a single hour when I’ve gotten to know a student’s learning style and we’re able to zone in on their specific needs. My goal is to help my students overcome learning losses and find their way in our ever-changing technological world. Working one-on-one with a student to assess their strengths, weaknesses, and particular learning styles is fascinating to me.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
For me, it was always a matter of life balance. Having young children and a career in tutoring did not mesh, as I did not want to leave for work right when they got home from school! Even when they were high schoolers, there were many times I felt it would be more reasonable and sustainable to be home with them in the afternoons and evenings. Since my children left the nest for college and adult lives, my tutoring hours (afternoons/evenings) work much better for us (though weeknight dinners with my husband are a bit late)!
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Grace Lines Tutoring, LLC?

I was primarily an outdoor child! I loved to play in the woods and gardens, and take care of all my cats, dogs, guinea pigs, roosters, mice, rats, and hamsters. I was also a ballerina, punk rocker, and environmental and animal rights activist.
