Today we’d like to introduce you to Hannah Cairns.
Hi Hannah, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Sunrise was started in 1996 with owners Bonnie and Tom Goodwin. They were ready to retire and looking for someone to buy the business. I was a teacher for 10 years and inquired as a long time customer what would happen to the bakery when they retired. They thought someone already working in the bakery was going to buy it but that didn’t work out so they reached out to my husband and I to set up a meeting to discuss. After several meetings they asked me to quit my job teaching and come train under them. After several months they were confident we would be the best option to keep the bakery alive and running. 7 years later here we are.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Definitely not. COVID was one of the hardest things Ive ever experienced. Being a business owner during this time was not for the weak. Every day was a new challenge to keep your business afloat.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
We specialize in homemade breads and baked goods. I am most proud of our lunch menu that we started with Boars Head Meats and our homemade breads. Our business is different than any other business because of the environment. Its like coming back home every time you walk in the door.
What matters most to you? Why?
I think the thing that matters most to me is keeping the community and everything that Sunrise means to everyone alive. This is a place I use to visit every day before I owned it and now I want to keep that tradition alive for everyone who steps foot in here.
