Demetrius Watts of Winter Park on Life, Lessons & Legacy

We recently had the chance to connect with Demetrius Watts and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Demetrius , thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Well, I’ve officially entered my ‘golf’ era at the ripe age of 35! It all started after a show at a course in Detroit. I figured, if I’m going to be hanging around greens, I might as well play. So I got back to Florida, invested in some clubs, and now my living room has a permanent putting station. And you know what? It’s too much fun bruh. It’s my new quiet time before the comedy shows.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
The Watts Brand! “Energy is everything”
I’m going to say the rest in 3rd person, as if I’m introducing myself LETS HAVE FUN!
When it comes to comedy, D.Watts is all about the energy. Hailing from the Pensacola and Orlando scenes, this observational truth-teller serves up a uniquely relatable style, playing the “Every Man” who isn’t afraid to point out the hilarious truths we all see but rarely say. Want to feel that energy for yourself? Catch his latest stand-up specials, behind-the-scenes content, and tour dates across all major platforms. Okay, so here’s a deep one: What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
You know, it’s hard to pin down just one moment because my life has felt like a movie. But if I go back to the earliest shaping force, I’d say it was the aftermath of September 11th. I was about ten years old, and my mom, who’s in the military, was facing deployment. The reality hit me: I’m a kid with a single mom going to war, and I might not see her again. That’s when it clicked, the understanding that life is fragile and you have to be prepared to make your own way in the world. That urgency to ‘make something happen’ for myself started right there.

What did suffering teach you that success never could?
They say you put silver through the fire to purify it, and a diamond under pressure to form it. I believe that’s true for success—it’s born from suffering. The real triumph is learning to appreciate that difficult journey.

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. Is the public version of you the real you?
As a comedian, the ‘public me’ is absolutely the real me—just with a heightened sense of awareness. Offstage, I self-regulate like anyone else. But onstage, that’s the space where the filters can come off and we can really examine life’s absurdities. It’s about having a playground for ideas where you can push boundaries, but also understanding the responsibility that comes with it. The goal is to be provocative, not problematic.

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. Have you ever gotten what you wanted, and found it did not satisfy you?
Yeah, it was an ex girlfriend. No names need to be mentioned, but she was a Karen.
