Hi Calicia, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey into bookkeeping actually started by accident! Over 15 years ago, I was working for my family’s construction business when our bookkeeper suddenly quit. My stepmom looked at me and said, “Congratulations, you’re the new bookkeeper!” So, I jumped in headfirst. I took some classes at Miami-Dade College to learn the ropes and, to my surprise, I fell in love with it.
After moving from Miami, I kept finding myself in bookkeeping roles and realized this was more than just a job — it was something I was really passionate about. I love bringing organization and peace of mind to business owners who’d rather focus on running their business than juggling spreadsheets.
In December 2024, I finally decided to take a leap of faith and start my own business, Cal the Bookkeeper. Now I get to work with amazing small business owners remotely, helping them feel confident and in control of their finances — and I couldn’t imagine doing anything else.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It hasn’t been too bad, but like any new business, there have been a few challenges along the way. When I first started, I knew I had to get my name out there, so the first thing I did was join the South Lake Chamber of Commerce, BNI, and a few local networking groups. That really helped me meet people and start building relationships.
There’s definitely been a learning curve — figuring out how to market myself, manage everything on my own, and balance client work at the same time. But each challenge has helped me grow, and I’ve met some incredible people along the way who’ve supported and encouraged me to keep going.
We’ve been impressed with CAL The Bookkeeper, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Cal the Bookkeeper is all about helping small business owners feel organized, confident, and in control of their finances. I provide remote bookkeeping and payroll services, as well as help with sales tax and 1099 processing. My goal is to make things simple for business owners so they can focus on what they do best — running their business — while I take care of the numbers.
What really sets me apart is the personal connection I build with my clients. I don’t believe in cookie-cutter bookkeeping. Every business is different, and I take the time to understand their needs, their goals, and even their stress points. Many of my clients tell me that after working with me, they finally feel at ease about their books — and that’s the best compliment I could ask for.
Brand-wise, I’m proud that Cal the Bookkeeper reflects who I am: professional, approachable, and passionate about helping others succeed. I want readers to know that bookkeeping doesn’t have to be overwhelming or intimidating — with the right support, it can actually bring peace of mind and even excitement about your business’s financial health.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
My best advice is to just start — even if it’s not perfect. There’s never going to be a “perfect” time to launch or a magic moment when everything feels ready. You learn so much by actually doing.
I’d also say: don’t be afraid to put yourself out there. Join your local chamber, go to networking events, talk to people, and share what you do. Building relationships has been the biggest key to my growth.
Something I wish I knew early on is that it’s okay to say no. When you’re new, you want to take on every client and every opportunity, but not every client is the right fit. It’s important to know your worth, set boundaries, and focus on the kind of work — and clients — that align with your goals and values.
And most of all, give yourself grace. There will be ups and downs, but if you stay consistent and keep learning, you’ll get there.
