Today we’d like to introduce you to Bernice Stewart.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Ive always wanted to start a business I just didn’t know where to begin. I was in my car on the work to my 9-5 in the mcdonalds line and told myself “I have to start something else, I’m just not sure what just yet. That year July, I made chocolate covered strawberries for July 4th for a family gathering and my family loved them. So a few weekends after that We had a garage sale in our community and at first I was hesitant on displaying them, but my Aunt told me to just bring them out so I did, and that same day I had sold strawberries and got my first order for a baby shower. I went and made business cards and picked up more supplies and thats where the Journey started for Bernices Berries and more. I started off selling items at work, at the local farmers market and then Covid hit. I quit my job and branched out to baking as well, and thats when my business flourished, I had 30- 40 of my special cupcake “strawberry cheesecake” orders daily. I kept pushing myself and kept networking and met so many different business owners and fast forward to today I now specialize in custom cakes. I still offer treats such as strawberries and other chocolate confections but my passion is baking.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Nothing ever goes the way we want it to right? There have been a few bumps . Trying to please everyone is so hard, and I had to overcome that and understand not every single person will be pleased but to also leave room for constructive criticism to allow myself to grow.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I specialize in delicate desserts and custom cakes. I love to come up with new recipes and different desserts for my clients to try. I am most known for Chocolate covered strawberries and my speciality strawberry cheesecake cupcakes. One day I was out shopping and someone came up to me and said” aren’t you the strawberry lady” Also, another time my mother was wearing a business shirt inside of Dunkin Donuts and a lady approached her and said “Your daughter makes the prettiest and tastiest desserts, we just love her”. Those are the moments that make me most proud. What sets me apart from other is, Its not just about money for me, Its about making those special connections with. my customers and to keep them coming back. I have had a customer for gender reveal, baby shower, and now up until his 4th birthday. We all know its more convenient and cheaper to go to publix or walmart, but to continuously support my small business is so special and that why I always go above and beyond.
How do you think about luck?
Being in the right places and the right times, Ive met so many amazing people in my community by just being in the right places and making those connections and acting on them.
