Exploring Life & Business with Terrie Scott of A Heart to Give, Inc.

Today we’d like to introduce you to Terrie Scott.

Hi Terrie, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Growing up, we were the family that always needed assistance. My dad worked all the time and my mom even got a part time job to help pay the bills, but we were still never fully caught up, we moved often when rent would go up, because we couldn’t afford to stay in the house we were in. I always knew if I was ever in a position to help others, I would. I would watch my mom and dad give their very last penny to help someone. My parents didn’t have much to give, if anything at all, but they still gave. They lived with their hands and heart open. I am here today, doing what I’m doing, because of them.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It’s been pretty smooth. The struggles we have are financial struggles. We don’t bring in millions like some other local non profits. I run the non profit out of my home, with 6 kids in tow, and a very supportive husband. We did aquire a storage unit this year, which gets things out of my garage, but, it costs money. I have an amazing church community and the west Orange community that has rallied together to help keep it, but knowing our 6 month lease is almost up, is nail biting. We would love to continue having the storage unit as long as possible.

As you know, we’re big fans of A Heart to Give, Inc. . For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
We help provide hope and practical support to families in need, helping them face challenges with dignity and compassion. We help people all across the spectrum. From singer moms to double income families. We help women coming out of domestic violence situations get on their feet and we will help furnish their new, safe place so they do not have to carry that burden on them. We host baby showers and birthday parties to families that need help. We will sit with Families and help them budget in hopes to get them to a place where they can be self-sufficient for their own families. Our biggest events are our back to school drive, Thanksgiving food drive, and our Christmas toy drive. In 2024, we helped over 2,200 kids with Christmas presents.
We do this with compassion and treat everyone as a human. I’ve worked at other organizations where you get treated like a number and I never want to treat someone as a number. They are just like you and I and they should be treated with respect.
I am proud of the non profit I started. One thing I pride myself in, is I want to ignite hope in every individual I come in contact with. If we can give someone just a shimmer of hope, we can help change the trajectory of someone’s life.
Every year we have families that we have helped in the past come back and want to help other families. Those are the stories that keep us going.
