Check Out Nathan West’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nathan West.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
We are a roofing and construction company born in partnership with solar companies. Specifically, we share common ownership with Solar Source, an established solar company which just passed its 40th anniversary in business. Our company was founded initially because they had been struggling to find reliable roofers who worked with integrity. Once they met and worked with Brian Strnad II, the license holder for SunSmart Roofing, they were so impressed they started this company with him.

Because of that, we at SunSmart Roofing build our roofs to be solar ready. Our standard roof is made from the start with materials allowing it to be well-prepared for the dozens to hundreds of penetrations that come with a solar system. Our philosophy of building the roof right and our team’s customer-obsession are why we have been consistently well-reviewed by our past clients. In construction, we know anything can happen, which means unexpected things happen, not all of which are positive. When those things go wrong, we always make sure to make it right.

Now, in addition to the homeowners who choose to work with us directly, we also partner with many solar contractors to provide an easy system for their team to sell roofs through our proprietary software, RoofSync. RoofSync allows our partner company’s sales reps to build a SunSmart roofing quote in minutes while they are in the house with the homeowner. While RoofSync was only launched in mid-2025, we expect the program to grow rapidly from partnerships we have already solidified.

To cap our story off, let me relay a story from one of our clients we served in 2025. The customer, Mr. Cone, located in Lutz, had concerns over their roof’s integrity and wanted us to replace all of their wood decking, something which is not typical. Due to scheduling challenges, we were notified of this the day before the build, but were able to quote it and add it to the work on short notice. During the build, while the decking was off, a hammer fell through the garage ceiling. Upon notification of this, we scheduled drywall repairs after the project’s completion date. After the project’s completion, an aesthetic issue with the ridge vent was noted, so we sent a crew back out to remedy the issue. Due to the many issues throughout the build, SunSmart Roofing provided a complimentary wind mitigation report, which typically costs $200.

Jon Nettles, who was the dedicated project manager for Mr. Cone reported that after everything was done, the customer, who had been justifiably upset at the issues during the project, told Jon something Jon would never have expected. Mr. Cone told SunSmart Roofing that he did not want us to cover the wind mitigation. Mr. Cone further said he requested this because he wanted to offer his thanks for everything Jon had done to make sure the project went well and as a thanks for Jon’s efforts in ensuring the issues were made right.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
There are always pain points in business, especially in a business which has the intent to grow, as SunSmart Roofing does. SunSmart Roofing is fortunate to have the shared ownership it does, giving it access to the ownership team with four decades of experience running a successful and profitable business. In short, it has been a smooth road so far, but we look forward to our biggest challenges in the future as we balance maintaining our strong business fundamentals with our ambitious growth goals.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am Nathan West, the Sales Manager for SunSmart Roofing. My specialty is sales but I’ve been a general manager for a previous employer, so I feel well-rounded in my industry experience.

I am most proud of the customer experience that I and my team provide. In an industry where just answering the phone when it rings can set you apart, we try to go above and beyond standard expectations to deliver an experience free from worry, wonder or issue. From selling by educating our customers, to constant communication on the status of the job, to showing up at the job site to clean up—even after the crew did their own clean up—my team strives to deliver an experience to every customer that would be fitting for our own family members.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I don’t believe in luck. The thing that was the furthest from my control—though I attribute it to being God’s plan rather than luck—is being born to my parents. My father modeled for me what it takes to have a successful marriage and career, and my mother home schooled me and my two siblings. For me, this gave me a strong academic foundation and guided me in my faith formation.

I certainly feel blessed to have had the experiences I have and to be in the position I am, but it’s not by chance that I am here. After three years selling in the roofing industry, I spent about six months interviewing at different companies and even working for a few others briefly until I found SunSmart Roofing.

Their commitment to providing a great product and experience aligned with my personal goals in my search, and I’ve come to love the entire team at our company. It’s rare to enjoy your work, so I thank God that I do.
