Today we’d like to introduce you to Victoria Balkissoon.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Both my business partner Matt and I attended the University of Central Florida in pursuit of a career in software engineering after discovering our love for coding in high school. Matt graduated in 2015 from UCF with a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science while I graduated in 2019 with a bachelor’s in Computer Engineering. Though separated by four years, we each found our post-college full-time jobs at the same place, NAWCTSD Orlando. It was during our work together at the Navy, we realized that we have complementary skills and really excelled when we put our minds together. In turn, we started working on hobby software projects outside of work because we just really enjoyed working together and solving complex problems. After doing so for a decent amount of time, we thought that we would have so much more potential for success if we opened a company doing what we love which inspired us to open NightShift Codes. Since opening NightShift Codes in 2023, we have worked with several different clients in varying fields to solve complex internal problems and bring to life their ideas, allowing their companies to flourish.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Though the road has not always been smooth, we have tried to deal with the bumps the best we could and look for positive outcomes. The largest struggle we had to deal with was attracting clients when we first started NightShift Codes. It was a very slow process and we leaned heavily on our personal network to help us build our client list and our company’s network as well. We have been fortunate enough that our clients have brought along their network and we have been able to grow ours significantly. After dealing with a slow start, the other major struggle we had to deal with was understanding how to run a business. There definitely was a learning curve in understanding everything from contracts, to taxes and everything in between to keep the company going. We’ve learned a lot and continue to do so, but now that we’ve been in the software agency business for a bit, we understand the challenges much better.
We’ve been impressed with NightShift Codes, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
NightShift Codes is a software development and consulting company here in Orlando. We specialize in web and mobile app development for both business and consumer-facing applications. We often work with small businesses looking to improve their digital presence, or need custom tooling to make their business run smoother, or are just getting started and looking to establish their digital presence. To help small businesses control costs, we offer a kickstarter called Business in a Box, which allows companies to select from a bento box of development options such as a custom website, SEO optimization, pre-built internal tooling and many other options at a prefix cost. Our company helps businesses, both big and small, bring their technological ideas to life!
