Exploring Life & Business with Dr. Marcia Norman of Positive Change Counseling, PLLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Marcia Norman.

Dr. Marcia, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I have always thought people were fascinating: as a child I loved to read biographies and “Can this Marriage Be Saved” articles (which is probably a little unusual for a child, lol). When I started going to college (at the advanced age of 37) I gravitated towards psychology classes and philosophy classes, and ended up graduating from Rollins College with dual majors in both disciplines. I then went to Florida Tech (while still raising kids) and earned a Master’s degree and Doctorate degree in Clinical Psychology. I found myself deeply interested in people’s life stories, and I enjoyed figuring out what was holding them back from all they wanted to achieve in life. I also love to help people smash through limiting beliefs and increase their self-esteem and self-confidence. It is a gift to me when people trust me enough to enter their emotional world, and I don’t take it lightly. I have to say I love my job.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
For various reasons I was unable to attend college in my twenties. When I was in my early 40’s I finally gathered the courage to leave an abusive, narcissistic husband. As many of you know, leaving a husband – particularly a narcissistic husband – is not easy. But I worked hard on having the courage to do so, increasing my self-esteem and getting though college one class at a time. As I mentioned earlier, I was also still raising four children. To say any of this was easy would be a lie. But again, one baby step at a time brought me to the life I love.

Now, that is one of my favorite things to treat: people – especially women – who are not happy and feel stuck in their life. I love to help identify what is holding them back and work, step-by-step, to achieve their dreams.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I have been counseling for over twenty years. I have worked with the military, in domestic abuse shelters, in community mental health and also supervised a team of 10 therapists working in the Osceola County School System. When I started my private practice I focused on kids and teens, as well as adults and couples. After several years I focused mainly on people over 65. Now, in my private practice on Park Ave., in Winter Park, Florida I see mainly adults and couples. I am trained in trauma, depression, anxiety, relationship work and life changes.

What does success mean to you?
Defining success is different for everyone. For me, I have always believed if I could help just one person change their life for the better, my life would have been a success.

I have achieved this and feel very good about it.
