Today we’d like to introduce you to Dan Kapellen.
Hi Dan, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Change rarely begins with certainty. Often, it starts with curiosity—and the courage to imagine a different path.
For Dan Kapellen, that curiosity began on a farm outside the small town of Plymouth, Wisconsin. As the oldest of seven children, Dan grew up learning responsibility early. Farm life demanded long hours, problem-solving, and persistence. The expectation was clear: one day, he would take over the farm and continue what generations before him had built.
Yet even as a young boy, Dan sensed that his life might extend beyond the fields. He remembers lying on his back, watching white streaks cut across the sky. His father explained they were vapor trails from jet airplanes carrying businesspeople from city to city. Dan was captivated—not just by airplanes, but by the idea of a world far larger than the one he could see. Iconic places like Big Ben, the Eiffel Tower, and the Great Wall of China felt almost mythical, distant, and unreachable for a farm kid from rural Wisconsin.
The first pivotal turning point came in high school. A counselor noticed Dan’s aptitude for math and science, paired with his quiet restlessness about life on the farm. Rather than steering him toward a specific career, the counselor asked a deeper question: What kind of work would allow you to live a life of satisfaction? That question stayed with Dan. It gave him permission to imagine a future shaped not by expectation, but by purpose.
Choosing college over the farm was not an easy decision and was met with resistance. Still, persistence—another lesson learned early—carried him forward. Dan became the first among his extended family of cousins to attend college, studying engineering. College was challenging, but the discipline and work ethic developed on the farm served him well. He went on to earn a master’s degree, completing a graduate thesis on hybrid vehicle technology at a time when such concepts were still considered experimental. His academic work intersected with early automotive innovation, as his major professor consulted on Toyota’s first Prius hybrid.
Dan’s professional career placed him at the forefront of technological change. At Ford Motor Company, he developed some of the earliest algorithms for computer control of passenger vehicles, helping usher in the transition from carburetors and mechanical ignition systems to electronically controlled engines. Later, he applied similar principles to diesel engines used in Ford pickup trucks, developing control algorithms for the Navistar diesel engine platform. These systems became foundational—early building blocks for the more advanced engine management technologies in use today.
His expertise eventually led to a global role with an international supplier of engine control systems. Dan traveled extensively overseas, standing in front of landmarks he once believed were beyond his reach. The farm boy who had once questioned whether he belonged in the wider world now found himself helping shape technologies that would influence vehicles for decades.
The second major turning point arrived unexpectedly. Years of frequent time-zone changes, relentless travel, and a long daily commute took a toll on his health, culminating in a hospital stay. In that moment of forced stillness, Dan gained clarity. He realized that good health was essential—not only for his family, but to be of value to God, to meaningful work, and to the people he was meant to serve. If an opportunity arose, he decided that he would step away from corporate life and choose a path aligned with balance and purpose.
That opportunity came during the Great Recession of 2008–2009. Dan opted for early retirement, closing one chapter and opening another. Drawing again on the traits forged on the farm—hard work, persistence, and creativity—he began an entrepreneurial journey that led him into mortgage lending. Over time, he added credentials as a Certified Mortgage Advisor and a Certified Reverse Mortgage Specialist.
Today, Dan focuses on helping senior homeowners remain in their homes longer and guiding individuals and families through important financial decisions with clarity and care. His approach is education-first, shaped by a belief that people deserve honest guidance—not pressure—when navigating life’s transitions.
Dan lives in The Villages, Florida with his wife, Connie. He has daughters living in Madison, Wisconsin and Stuttgart, Germany—fitting bookends to a life that began on a farm and grew through curiosity, courage, and a commitment to making meaningful change.
Pull-Quote that summarizes my life in one sentence: “Real change happens when curiosity meets purpose—and the courage to choose a better path.”
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
They are described in the prior section:
1. The family resistance I met when contemplating college.
2. The health crises I encountered from disrupted sleep patterns caused by frequent time zone changes and long commutes.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
The most effective networking I’ve experienced starts with clarity. When you know what you’re trying to learn or where you want to go, the right people stand out. I focus on listening rather than selling myself, paying attention to values, perspective, and alignment. Many of my best mentors emerged naturally from genuine conversations, not formal asks.
Clarity creates direction, and listening creates connection.
