Today we’d like to introduce you to Brendan and Katherine Wright.
Hi Brendan and Katherine, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Detour to Neverland was started in August of 2018 when Brendan’s corporate career path was not providing the fulfillment he desired. He decided to merge his passion for all things Disney and entrepreneurship into a podcast about telling Disney stories. It started as a way to connect with the Disney community, although we were in Nashville, TN at the time. Brendan spent those beginning months reaching out to content creators and shop owners in the Disney community and interviewing them about their love for Disney, how they created their project and advice for others who may want to do the same.
A few months into the podcast, Katherine joined the team as a co-host, and we began to branch into other elements of Disney storytelling, focusing on the detailed stories in the parks and restaurants. In addition to the podcast, we have shared these stories on social media such as Instagram and Tik Tok and, most recently, YouTube. Our passion for Disney continued to grow so much that in June of 2020, we decided to move to Florida to be closer to the magic. Since then, we have enjoyed having the opportunity to spend more time at Disney, grow Detour to Neverland, and make central Florida our new home!
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Starting a podcast with no background knowledge or experience was hard a first. Brendan listened to several podcasts on his daily commute and took inspiration from each of those to create a format for the show. From there we bought some basic equipment and a microphone and decided to just go for it. Luckily, finding people in the Disney community to connect with and the interview was the easy part. The hard part was marketing the podcast so that others would be able to find it and listen. That’s where social media came into the picture, and we discovered the challenges of finding an audience on each of those different platforms. We became discouraged because we didn’t initially see the growth we expected. This caused us to fall into a cycle where we compared what we were doing to others in an attempt to look for a quick fix. We had to reach a point where we discovered that the only way to make the podcast sustainable was to create content that we were passionate about, which brought us back to our original purpose of sharing Disney stories.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Brendan is self-employed and works in program development. He is currently working on software for engineering firms to aid in project and data management. He is most proud of his ability to carve out a career that allows him to create his own schedule and follow his interests after identifying the life we wanted to live and taking continuous steps to make it a reality.
Katherine is a fourth-grade teacher in central Florida. When making the decision to move to Florida, she knew she wanted to continue to teach. She is most proud of the relationships she is able to make with her students and the life lessons she can teach to help make life-long leaders.
So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
We are always looking to network and make new connections! The best way to support us is to consume our content and leave positive reviews if our content gave any entertainment or education that you enjoyed.
