Today we’d like to introduce you to James McElhaney.
Hi James, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started my career as a traveling Speech and Language Pathologist inside hospitals and skilled nursing facilities. Primarily working closely with patients in memory care or in the ICU evaluating patients who needed swallowing studies to safely eat, drink, and live well. Early in my career I noticed the out-patient experience was flawed: the care was excellent, but the process wasn’t built around the patient.
So I asked a simple question: Why does healthcare require people to travel, wait, and adapt, when the technology already exists to go to them?
That question became the foundation of Mobile Swallowing Diagnostics, in short MSDx.
Instead of asking patients to fit into the system, we built a system that fits into their lives. Using hospital-grade imaging, expert clinicians, and a fully mobile medical unit, we bring Videofluoroscopic Swallow Studies and esophageal imaging directly to the patients without sacrificing quality, accuracy, travel time for patients, or delays.
Today, MSDx represents everything I believe healthcare should be:
-Accessible
-Efficient
-Collaborative
-Patient-driven
Results are discussed immediately, care teams stay connected, and patients feel informed and empowered.
This journey has been driven by one mission from day one:
Reimagine healthcare by bringing it to the patient… a seamless yet professional care delivered with excellence.
And we’re just getting started.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road hasn’t been smooth – but it’s been intentional.
Healthcare doesn’t reward shortcuts. One of the biggest challenges has been developing a strong foundation around a non-innovative process.
Every decision – from clinical standards, to equipment selection, to building a mobile model that actually works in real-world facilities – required patience and precision.
There were moments when we could have launched sooner by compromising these things BUT we didn’t.
Because when you’re dealing with patient safety, clarity and trust matters more than speed. Taking the time to design a model that truly serves patients, providers, and caregivers meant slowing down, asking harder questions, and making disciplined choices.
Those challenges didn’t delay the mission—they prepared it.
They allowed us to build MSDx on a strong foundation, so when we show up, we show up ready to rock and roll. Not with a concept, but with a solution that’s built to last and designed to make a real difference from day one.
As you know, we’re big fans of Mobile Swallowing Diagnostics, LLC (MSDx). For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Mobile Swallowing Diagnostics is a healthcare company created with one clear purpose: to make advanced swallowing diagnostics more accessible, personal, and patient-centered. We specialize in Modified Barium Swallow Studies (MBSS/VFSS) and esophageal imaging such as: Esophagrams and Upper Gastrointestinal series, delivering hospital-level evaluations through a fully mobile medical unit.
What sets MSDx apart is not just what we do, but how we do it. Our model brings specialized clinicians, high-quality imaging, and thoughtful communication directly to patients, facilities, and physician offices. By meeting people where they are, we aim to create an experience that feels calmer, and more welcoming… without compromising clinical excellence.
We are especially focused on transparency and education. Results are discussed in real time whenever possible, helping patients, caregivers, and providers feel informed and confident in the next steps of care. Our services are designed to support collaboration across care teams while reducing logistical barriers for patients who may have difficulty traveling or navigating traditional medical environments.
Our brand: what we’re most proud of is our commitment to dignity and intentional design. Every aspect of MSDx-from the mobile unit to the patient experience-has been built with comfort, clarity, and respect in mind. We believe healthcare can be both highly technical and deeply compassionate.
What we want readers to know is that MSDx represents a shift in how diagnostic care can be delivered. It’s about access, connection, and reimagining healthcare in a way that truly serves people first.
We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I believe luck often shows up as timing and alignment, but it only matters if you’re prepared to recognize it.
In my life and career, I’ve been fortunate to cross paths with the right mentors, collaborators, and supporters at pivotal moments. Those connections didn’t happen by accident; they came through showing up consistently, doing the work, and being open to learning and growth. When opportunities presented themselves, I was ready to buckle down and I am forever grateful for those opportunities.
At the same time, there have been moments that didn’t go as planned, and I’ve learned to see those not as “bad luck”, but as a redirection. Slowing down, reassessing, and refining the vision has allowed the business to grow more intentionally and with greater clarity.
Overall, I see luck as an opportunity that you’re either prepared for or you’re not . Passion, persistence, and purpose create the conditions… and when timing aligns, momentum follows.
