Check Out Joanie Husband’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joanie Husband.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I actually found fitness at a time when I least expected it. As a teenager, I was shy, not athletic, and honestly dreaded gym class—until one day a guest fitness instructor came in and taught a class. Something clicked. Afterward, my gym teacher introduced me to her and said it was the first time he’d ever seen me “light up” in gym class. That moment changed everything. I became a fitness instructor while still in high school and continued teaching throughout college at St. Thomas University in Florida.
Over the years, I worked in many different industries—flight attendant, doctor’s office, bartending—but the constant thread was always fitness. No matter what job I held, I was teaching classes on the side. When I met my husband, I was juggling four jobs at once, one of them being fitness. He encouraged me to truly build it as a business, and together we created something sustainable—allowing me to eventually leave my other jobs and support my family solely through my fitness career.
Since then, I’ve been incredibly fortunate to experience opportunities I never imagined: becoming a sponsored athlete with Athleta, being featured on the Discovery Channel through the K9 Fit Club, traveling worldwide to teach fitness classes at vacation destinations, and most importantly, impacting people’s lives through movement. I describe what I do as motivational fitness—because while the workouts matter, helping people believe in themselves, feel confident, and stay active for life is what truly drives me. We were truly honored to. have a documentary team from Sweden travel here this past November to cover our lives for a new documentary on Healthy Aging! We represented the United States for this documentary (they also covered Italy and of course Sweden)

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Not at all—it definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Fitness can look glamorous from the outside, but like many small businesses, it’s built on a lot of hustle, uncertainty, and resilience. Early on, I struggled with confidence, especially coming from a place of being shy and not fitting the “typical” athletic mold. I also spent years juggling multiple jobs at once, teaching classes early mornings, late nights, and weekends, while trying to figure out how to make fitness sustainable long-term.
There were also financial challenges and moments of burnout—times when I questioned whether I could really turn my passion into a career that supported my family. The fitness industry constantly evolves, so I’ve had to adapt, reinvent myself, and stay relevant while still staying true to who I am. Add in life changes, raising kids, and the physical demands of the work, and there were plenty of moments that tested me.
What kept me going was the impact—seeing people gain confidence, improve their health, and show up for themselves. Those struggles shaped my approach and are a big reason I focus on motivational fitness. I don’t just train bodies; I understand the mental and emotional side of the journey, because I’ve lived it too. I live by the motto, whatever tests you makes you stronger (that goes for your workouts as well!)

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
My work centers on helping people stay strong, confident, and capable at every stage of life. I specialize in what I call motivational fitness—training that’s not just about how you look, but how you feel, move, and live. Having raised five children and rebuilt my own fitness along the way, I truly understand the challenges of finding time, energy, and confidence to prioritize yourself. Now, in my 60s, I also deeply understand what our bodies need in this season of life.
What I’m known for is creating well-rounded, personalized workouts that include all the essential modalities—strength, balance, flexibility, mobility, and cardiovascular conditioning. Every class is thoughtfully designed, and no two workouts are exactly the same. Balance is just as important as strength, and mobility matters as much as muscle. My goal is to help people move better in their everyday lives, not just perform in a workout.
Since moving to Florida, our YouTube channel, Villages Healthy Living, has become an exciting extension of my business. It allows us to connect with people who are looking for the benefits of living an active, healthy lifestyle—especially those who are focused on longevity rather than aesthetics. This isn’t about being in a bikini anymore; it’s about feeling strong, independent, and vibrant for years to come.
What I’m most proud of is the community we’ve built and the lives we’ve impacted. What sets me apart is that I meet people where they are. I understand the physical, mental, and emotional side of fitness because I’ve lived it—and I design every workout with that understanding at the core. One of my favorite sayings – Getting older is a privilege getting stronger is a choice

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
My biggest advice is to stop viewing others in your industry as competitors and start seeing them as collaborators. Some of the most valuable mentorship I’ve experienced has come from simply connecting with other fitness professionals, sharing ideas, and being open about both successes and challenges. No one builds a lasting career alone.
Earlier in my career, I ran a mentoring group in the Northeast, and it was incredibly rewarding—for everyone involved. I’m excited to do the same now that I’m in Florida, because there’s so much talent here and so much we can learn from one another. The fitness industry is constantly evolving, and staying connected helps all of us grow, adapt, and stay inspired.
I’ve also found that creating opportunities for others strengthens your own network. Through my online portal, I invite other instructors to participate with me, expand their reach, and share their expertise. That kind of collaboration builds trust, community, and longevity—both personally and professionally.
What’s worked best for me is leading with generosity, staying curious, and never assuming you have nothing left to learn. When you approach networking with that mindset, mentorship often happens naturally.
