Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Doe.
Hi Sarah, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I knew I was drawn to alternative culture before I even had the language for it. I was six years old, growing up in a retirement community, when I saw someone’s older sister pick them up from my daycare. She had bright blue hair, tattoos, and a nose ring. I didn’t know people were even allowed to look like that! It felt like seeing an alien – in the best way possible. I remember staring in total awe, and in that moment, I just knew… That was what I was destined for: authentic self-expression, without apology.
That early spark grew into a lifelong calling. I’ve now been tattooing for 15 years, and while I work across many creative mediums, tattooing is where my heart truly thrives. Tattoos carry an incredible amount of power – they’re permanent, intentional, and deeply personal. They allow people to reclaim their bodies, tell their stories, and mark moments of transformation. Being trusted with someone’s skin is an honor. I never take lightly.
Over the years, I’ve come to understand tattooing not just as an art form, but as a kind of trauma work. Art heals – and in tattooing, we’re creating trauma while also healing it. That paradox holds real weight. It requires presence, care, and respect. Every piece is a collaboration, rooted, and trust, and I feel incredibly grateful to serve people in that way.
At its core, my work has always been about helping people feel more like themselves; honoring individuality, and in service of self expression in one of its most honest and committed forms.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Well to start with; Tattooing is still a largely male dominated industry, and while I’ve had the pleasure of working alongside many incredibly talented and truly egalitarian male tattooers, I’ve also definitely faced my fair share of obstacles along the way; moments of having to prove myself twice over – earning respect, standing my ground, and carving out space in rooms that weren’t always built with me in mind. That said, I’m incredibly proud to see a new generation of artists entering the industry and bringing much needed diversity with them. I’m proud to say that I helped bulldoze that door down alongside many other women and minority artists who came before me and made it possible for the industry to continue evolving.
Beyond societal challenges, some of the most meaningful hurdles have been internal and personal. Tattooing requires you to show up fully for people during some of their most vulnerable moments, and that doesn’t stop just because you’re navigating your own life struggles. Holding space for clients through grief, healing, celebration, and transformation – while also managing your own experiences – takes emotional resilience and perpetual care.
Work life balance can be another ongoing challenge in this profession. Tattooing is also a very physically demanding job in ways that people don’t always realize, especially as it is a largely sedentary practice that requires long hours of focus and precision. Learning to take care of my body has been essential. Daily movement, especially yoga, has been instrumental in helping me overcome physical strain, staying grounded, and maintaining longevity in my career.
Every challenge has shaped not only how I work, but how I show up – for myself, my clients, and the community. I’m grateful to be a part of.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
A 15 year award-winning veteran of tattooing; I am based in Longwood Florida. I specialize in neotraditional, traditional and illustrative tattooing. My work often centers around flora, fauna, lady faces, and esoteric imagery. I work confidently in both black and gray as well as full color.
At the core of it all, I genuinely love what I do, and that passion shows up in every piece that I create. What I am most proud of is just that – I’ve built a career doing something I truly love. Tattooing isn’t just a job for me – it’s a practice I approach with intention, care, and respect. I view tattoos as a luxury service, and I strive to live up to that standard every time I sit down with a client. From the first conversation to the final healed peace, I want people to feel seen, heard, and taken care of. And that’s also what sets me apart; the level of presence and pride in the process. Every Tattoo is a collaboration, and I treat each one as a meaningful exchange – honoring both the art, and the person wearing it. Being able to create lasting, and empowering work while doing something I’m deeply passionate about is something that I never take for granted.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
I always just say open mouths get fed! If you keep going in the direction of your goals, the universe will sort you out every time. The steps are just a part of the journey itself, so patience is the key ingredient.. we only fail upwards, so if you stumble, just brush yourself off and keep going, sometimes you’re up and sometimes you’re down, you just have to find intentional joy throughout the process!
