Today we’d like to introduce you to Frank Rao.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started when I was very young, in New York City and upstate New York, where my father had art galleries and statuaries. So basically you could say I inherited my talent through my father. His family were immigrants from Italy, and I learned a lot about art viewing it and obviously doing it.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I learned young, in my teens and in my 20s, a lot of what not to do to be successful. I saw my father successes, and I saw disappointments, so I learned what to do, but I also learned what not to do to be successful. One thing I learned is not sit in an art gallery and wait for viewers, prospects, but rather get out in the field and somebody for appointments only so eventually I could have both venues working the gallery itself and the ability to travel and work with many interior designers who created terrific contacts thought the country and abroad
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I believe it sets me apart, is the ability to paint whatever people ask for. I can do portraits, landscapes, abstracts, animals, ocean scenes. It doesn’t matter I’m pretty talented with all of that and I think versatility is what really helps an artist be successful not just one genre. I’m proud that only 7% of people in the arts whether it’s music, writing, painting, can actually make a living doing it. Many artists I know have to have another job to supplement, I didn’t have to, so I could say that I’m very fortunate and not trying to sound braggadocio word-of-mouth working with clients giving input without telling them what they should do are parts of my success.
Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
I loved being in Manhattan to go to the museum of arts, history, visiting little Italy in lower Manhattan for the cuisine and the culture.I actually enjoyed Catholic school in New York City and then we would go upstate New York to the Catskills where I also had my education and friends from both locations to this day. Anything to do with learning reading and appreciating the many varieties of cultures. And as a kid, I love the New York Yankees baseball team that was my little escape, and I still currently follow.
