Today we’d like to introduce you to Mellissa Jagrup-Lee.
Mellissa worked with foster care and also youth in the community through the program, Children in Need of Services, Families in Need of Services (CINS FINS) to provide ongoing therapeutic assistance to those in need. She realized that the children in foster care suffered from traumatic experiences that required advocates that would provide the safety and care needed. In 2014, Jagrup-Lee started having ideas of having her own wellness center so that she could have the flexibility to incorporate and build an atmosphere that addresses the mental and physical aspects of the individual(s) seeking support. Alive & Well Corp was birth in March 2018; it provides services such as counseling and massages.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Some challenges include trying to accommodate everyone’s financial situation. A lot of the families are in survival mode and if it comes down to paying the bills and their next meal versus getting therapeutic support, the latter will take a back seat and so we offer a sliding scale fee to help with the cost so that these families understand that we are really here to support them as much as possible.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
We welcome clients with same week appointments and we offer insurance options and a sliding scale fee for those without insurances. We have created an atmosphere that is peaceful and supportive. We offer the utmost confidentiality so that clients are comfortable that what they share will stay within the confidence of their mental health and massage therapist. We have only licensed professionals at our center so that our clients receive support from knowledgeable individuals. Our goal is that an individual never leaves our Wellness Center the way they came in.
We provide therapy to adults, children, couples and families and we specialize in areas such as anxiety, depression, abuse, stress, anger management and trauma. We are also contracted with Lake County Schools and are able to go into the surrounding schools and provide therapeutic services. It’s a great feeling when we have contributed to helping them release past hurts and pains and have allowed them to feel confident enough to move forward with the right tools and coping skills so they feel empowered to continue on their life journey.
Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
My favorite snack to indulge in is Oreos and milk. It takes me back to a care free life. My mother after working hard all day would come home and surprise me and say, “guess what I got” and I would get excited as she hid whatever she had behind her back. I would fill my glass of milk and start dunking the Oreos as I sat on the couch curled up with a blanket. It became my escape and safe haven as I tried to navigate the adjustments that came with my teenage years.
