Meet Luis Rivera

Today we’d like to introduce you to Luis Rivera.

Hi Luis, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I am the creator, curator, organizer, host, graphic designer, marketer and sometimes photographer of the No Borders Art Competition. Six years ago a friend was partners with a bar called The Caboose Bar in the Winter Garden area and offered a night to put a show together. Being an MC and into the hip hop culture all my life I wanted to create something different. That something different was an art competition that I hadn’t seen since being in Orlando for now 13 years.

So, I researched materials and built boards suitable for our competition with Pedro Betancourt (One of our partners). We sat figured out a voting criterion that we still use till this day. I gathered four artists, worked on a promo video, uploaded to all social media platforms and made it “Important”.

Since the first show we quickly realized we had something good on our hands. As time progressed we realized it wasn’t only about having a good time. Artists needed a platform to showcase their talents. An event that all eyes are on them. So here we are working on giving artists as many opportunities as we can.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Being a husband and father it gets hard knowing you’re taking time away from them. Somethings we don’t get back. So I would have to say the hardest part is taking time away from my family. Of course, then you have the worries of putting on a successful event, looking for venues, artists, DJ’s etc.. I believe it’s just the nature of putting an event together.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m no different than anyone who wants to create. I believe we all have something we want to show but don’t know how. All My life I’ve been a creative person without knowing. I’ve been a professional barber for most of my life. I’ve self-taught myself pretty much everything that I know. From cutting hair to creating hip hop beats to writing songs. From photography to videography to editing to now hosting our own event. I would say I’m most proud of my Hip Hop roots since I feel that is what has me where I like to be.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
That I’m a rapper, song writer and producer.
