Today we’d like to introduce you to Sophia Seeramlal, M.Ed.
Hi Sophia, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
As a child, I spent hours on nature trails, cupping my hands to wish healing for injured insects. I didn’t have the language for it then, but I felt the restorative power of nature and the interconnectedness of all living beings. I could sense others’ pain deeply, and I wanted to help.
In school, my teachers opened my eyes to the systemic injustices harming people, animals, and the world. More importantly, they showed me the power educators wielded—not through authority, but through words that opened hearts and shifted behaviors. My favorite teacher helped me identify my own ethical values, and I committed to a compassionate, plant-based lifestyle just before college.
This transition became the foundation of everything that followed. I graduated Summa Cum Laude from City University of New York’s Honors College and earned a 4.0 GPA with my Master’s in Humane Education. I felt certain I had everything I needed to impact positive change in the world.
So I launched my own Humane Education organization, leading workshops on issues affecting people, animals, and the environment. At first, the work felt fulfilling—until I realized I was igniting transformation in others without giving them the tools to sustain it. Participants left feeling inspired but unsupported. I spiraled into compassion fatigue, burned out from giving without replenishing myself.
That’s when I turned inward. Through yoga, meditation, holistic medicine, and nature immersion therapy, I reconnected with my own soul and purpose. I studied under spiritual mentors, earned certifications as a Yoga teacher, transformational coach, and Reiki Master. I learned that real change happens when people are taught how to access their own inner wisdom, equipped with inner transformation tools, and empowered to create solutions that align with their highest values.
Today, Sophia Reiki & Wellness is where that understanding lives. I work with individuals, organizations, and leaders to dissolve inner barriers, learn resilience skills, and design fulfilling, soul-aligned lives. My approach is rooted in the gentle power of nature, where healing blossoms through safety, trust, and comforting support. Here, in my cupped hands, I continue to wish peace and healing for all.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
My chosen path has felt like one I’ve cleared with my own hands through the winding jungle forest of a tall mountain. From the moment I adopted a vegan diet, I often found myself navigating awkward, unsolicited conversations with seemingly concerned strangers about my personal lifestyle choices. But I remained composed and connected to my compassion for all life—especially when I found myself staring at empty restaurant plates while my dinner companions obliviously gushed over their amazing food.
But perhaps my most uncomfortable hurdle involved the original name of my company. When I first founded my work in 2014, I called it Sophia’s Soul Care—a simple name I chose because I quite literally helped my clients with deep-level care for their minds, bodies, hearts, and souls. But over time, the term “soul care” became popular amongst conversion-therapy-based religious organizations targeting vulnerable members of my LGBTQ+ community who were simply seeking genuine care. To make matters worse, a few fly-by-night practitioners with clever marketing tactics copied much of my business model and quickly swindled people of large sums of money. Not only did this disgust me—these businesses were harming people, hurting the field, and jading people from ever wanting to seek spiritual support again.
So with my rebranding to Sophia Reiki & Wellness, I rededicated my company to prioritize accessibility for all, including marginalized BIPOC and LGBTQ+ communities. I would soon learn, however, that fostering an inclusive community is in itself an act of rebellious solidarity—one that comes with unexpected negative consequences. There has been backlash as I refuse to frame my wellness events to exclude participants based on socioeconomic status, gender, sex, race, or any other marker. I have lost revenue, collaboration opportunities, clients, and even personal friends.
But this is an insignificant price to pay compared to the value of creating safe community wellness events open to all who are able to show up for themselves and others with kindness and respect.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Sophia Reiki & Wellness is a sanctuary space dedicated to soul sovereignty, natural wellness, and self-directed healing. I support individuals in remembering their innate wisdom, intuition, and capacity to heal themselves.

I specialize in helping individuals discover their innate healing power and live with greater purpose and joy. I’m known for my gentle, non-judgmental approach that honors the unique path of each soul.
What sets my work apart is that I empower individuals to unlock their own ability to heal and trust themselves, rather than relying on an external authority. My approach is rooted in humility, nature immersion, and holistic care—providing a safe and nurturing space for clients to reconnect with their intuition and inner authority.
I’m most proud of creating a sanctuary space that welcomes individuals from diverse backgrounds and offers various investment levels and free community events to make healing accessible to all. I want readers to know that Sophia Reiki & Wellness is a space for individuals to reclaim their sovereignty, intuition, and self-healing capacity. My mission is to gently guide individuals back to their own inner wisdom, empowering them to live with intention, clarity, and self-trust. I offer a range of services—self-paced courses, virtual wellness classes, energy wellness and coaching packages, and nature retreats—all designed to support clients in their journey toward sustainable, nature-aligned wellness.
How do you think about luck?
Luck has not been the architect of Sophia Reiki & Wellness. What brought me here was authenticity, integrity, and unwavering alignment with my soul path.
Every decision I’ve made—from adopting a plant-based lifestyle as a teenager, to leaving a “successful” career to heal myself, to rebranding my entire company when I realized it was being weaponized against the communities I serve—these were conscious choices rooted in my values, not fortunate accidents. I chose to turn inward during my burnout. I chose to study with mentors and earn certifications. I chose to rebuild my business with accessibility and inclusion as its foundation, even knowing the financial and relational costs.
The work I do today exists because I refused to compromise on who I am and what I stand for. When faced with the compromise of staying silent about “soul care” being co-opted by conversion therapy organizations, I chose integrity. When offered easier paths that excluded vulnerable communities, I chose solidarity. These weren’t lucky breaks—they were deliberate acts of alignment.
My journey has taught me that when you show up authentically, ground yourself in your values, and remain connected to your soul’s purpose, you don’t need luck. You create the conditions for meaningful work to unfold. This is what I hope to offer my clients: not a lucky escape from their struggles, but the tools and wisdom to become the authors of their own healing.
