Inspiring Conversations with Rana Sewsarran of The Luminaire Collective, with Culinary Excellence by Mad Mushroom Meals

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rana Sewsarran.

Hi Rana, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
When Orlando Voyager shared my story in 2022, Mad Mushroom Meals was already growing beyond what I had once imagined—but I still had no idea what it would eventually become.

I found my love for cooking after moving away for college and living on my own. What began as a personal passion became the foundation of my life’s work, and food has remained at the center of everything I have built.

Mad Mushroom Meals began with customized meal preparation and nutrition services before growing into private chef experiences, catering, weddings, corporate dining, and milestone celebrations. I built the business one client, one menu, and one carefully prepared meal at a time. There was no grand blueprint in the beginning. There was simply a genuine love for cooking and a desire to give people something that felt thoughtful, personal, and memorable.

Over time, clients began trusting us with more than their menus. Because they loved the food and the care surrounding it, they wanted that same level of intention carried throughout their entire celebration. They began asking us to help with the tablescapes, décor, entertainment, timelines, vendors, and overall atmosphere.

The food created the trust. Everything else grew from it.

This year, that growth became The Luminaire Collective, our full-service event production and concierge company. It was never created to move us away from food. It was created to give everything surrounding the culinary experience the same level of care.

Mad Mushroom Meals will always be the culinary heart of what we do. It is my first passion, the foundation of our reputation, and the reason so many clients initially welcome us into their lives. The Luminaire Collective now allows us to build the complete experience around that heart.

Today, our clients can come to us with the beginning of an idea, and we can bring the entire vision together under one roof—from culinary services, planning, venue sourcing, and décor to entertainment, bar service, staffing, vendor coordination, and full on-site production. Instead of asking a client to piece together several different companies, we can give them one connected team, one creative direction, and one experience that feels intentional from beginning to end.

This year, our work has taken us through an Alice in Wonderland-inspired celebration, an intimate coastal shipwreck dinner, The Moonlit Escape—a multi-day luxury waterfront experience—and an immersive 1920s event inspired by “Moulin Rouge meets Harlem Nights.”

Each experience looked and felt completely different, but every one of them began in the same place: with the food.

The menu helps us understand the story we are telling. From there, the room, entertainment, design, and guest experience begin to take shape around it. We are not simply decorating a space and adding catering afterward. We are creating one complete experience in which every detail belongs together.

There is a moment before every event begins when the room is ready, the final dishes are being prepared, and the guests have not yet arrived. I often pause and take it all in. What once began as a love for cooking has grown into rooms filled with people celebrating the moments that matter most to them. They have trusted us with anniversaries, birthdays, weddings, proposals, family milestones, and memories that can never be recreated in exactly the same way.

That trust means everything to me.

I never knew Mad Mushroom Meals would grow into something so incredible. I simply kept building, learning, creating, and saying yes to the possibilities in front of me. The business grew because the passion grew—and because our clients continued to believe we could give them something they had not experienced before.

The Luminaire Collective represents the next chapter of that growth. Our vision is to become a leading full-service event production company in Florida while protecting the culinary excellence and personal care that brought us here.

Mad Mushroom Meals gave us the table. The Luminaire Collective allowed us to build the entire world around it.

But no matter how large that world becomes, the food will always be where the story begins.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not been a smooth road, although the finished photographs can sometimes make it appear that way.

Behind every beautifully plated meal and transformed event space have been long nights, financial sacrifices, rewritten plans, unexpected cancellations, difficult lessons, and moments when we had to solve problems no guest would ever know existed. Entrepreneurship often requires you to create something beautiful while carrying pressures that remain completely invisible.

One of my earliest struggles was learning that passion and talent are only part of building a successful business. I also had to learn pricing, marketing, contracts, operations, client management, and how to protect the value of my work. I am naturally generous, so learning to place a fair value on my time, creativity, and experience was difficult. There is so much labor behind a service that clients never see—the planning, shopping, preparation, travel, communication, setup, breakdown, and countless details that happen before anyone takes the first bite.

For a very long time, I wore almost every hat in the business. I was the chef, nutritionist, menu designer, shopper, coordinator, decorator, server, marketing team, and problem-solver. I had been doing everything for so long that I did not always know how to ask for help—or even recognize when I needed it.

Independence had become part of how I survived, but eventually, it also became part of the weight I was carrying.

Over the past five years, Jonathan has helped me carry that weight. He did not simply step in to complete tasks; he became someone I could build with. We learned how to troubleshoot together, recover together, and look at every service honestly so we could make the next one better. When challenges arose, I no longer had to hold every answer by myself.

His creativity has also encouraged me to explore ideas I may not have pursued on my own. He has given me the confidence to take on greater challenges, trust my instincts, and allow my creativity to take up more space. At the same time, we have had to learn how to combine our different perspectives, communicate under pressure, and remain focused on the experience we promised our clients.

That partnership has been one of the most important parts of our growth.

I may have started Mad Mushroom Meals, but we have grown and evolved into what it is today together.

As the business expanded into full event production, our challenge became learning how to grow without losing the quality and personal care that built our reputation. Our clients may see one seamless experience, but behind it are venues, performers, vendors, schedules, deliveries, and moving parts that do not always go according to plan. When something changes, the responsibility still rests with us to protect the client’s experience.

Our greatest concern has never been simply becoming bigger. It has been making sure we never become too big to care.

There were internal struggles as well. I had to stop believing that I needed someone else’s permission to grow beyond the kitchen. People already knew me as a chef, but I could see an entire experience before it existed. Learning to trust that vision—and confidently step into my role as an event producer—required me to embrace a version of myself I was still becoming.

Jonathan’s support helped me make that transition. He believed in what we could create, challenged us to raise our standards, and reminded me that asking for help did not make me less capable. It gave us the ability to accomplish more together than either of us could have carried alone.

There have been moments of fear, exhaustion, disappointment, and self-doubt. There have been ideas that required more courage, time, and resources than we initially believed we had. But every challenge forced us to become more disciplined, more creative, and more certain about what we were building.

The road has not been smooth, but it has shaped us.

Every setback taught us to create stronger systems. Every unexpected change taught us to remain calm. Every difficult experience clarified the type of company we wanted to build. Most importantly, every client who trusted us again reminded us that the work was worth continuing.

I am proud of the beautiful experiences people see, but I am equally proud of everything it took to create them. The Luminaire Collective was not born from a perfect journey or the work of one person. It was born from persistence, partnership, creativity, and two people continuously asking each other, “How can we make the next experience even better?”

I began this journey carrying almost everything on my own. I did not arrive here alone.

The struggles did not take us away from our purpose. They taught us how to carry it together.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about The Luminaire Collective, with Culinary Excellence by Mad Mushroom Meals?
The Luminaire Collective, with Culinary Excellence by Mad Mushroom Meals, exists for people who want their guests to feel something—not simply attend something.

We are a full-service event production and concierge company serving clients throughout Florida. We create private dining experiences, weddings, milestone celebrations, corporate events, immersive themed events, and multi-day experiences. Our services can include everything from concept development, planning, venue sourcing, and décor to culinary services, entertainment, bar service, staffing, vendor coordination, photography, on-site production, and breakdown.

Mad Mushroom Meals is the culinary foundation of the company. Food is my passion, and it remains central to everything we create. We are known for customized menus, diverse cuisines, bold flavors, thoughtful presentation, and the ability to make each dining experience feel personal to the client. We are not confined to one cuisine or one service style because no two clients or celebrations are exactly alike.

What sets us apart is the way our culinary and event-production services work together. The menu is not added after the event has already been designed, and the guest experience is not separated from the food. We consider how everything connects—from what guests taste and see to how they are welcomed, entertained, and cared for throughout the event.

Full-service, to us, is not about selling a client as many services as possible. It is about taking responsibility for the complete experience. Instead of asking clients to manage multiple unrelated companies, we give them one trusted team and one connected vision beneath one roof.

We also do not believe luxury is defined by how much décor is placed in a room or how much money is spent. Luxury is feeling understood. It is being able to enjoy your own celebration without carrying the stress behind it. It is knowing that someone has listened closely enough to notice the details that matter to you.

Our work is highly personalized. We do not take an existing event and simply change the colors or names. We want to know who we are celebrating, what they love, and what would make the experience feel unmistakably theirs. That understanding guides every decision we make.

Brand-wise, I am most proud that our growth has not changed the heart of Mad Mushroom Meals. After more than a decade, the same care that built our reputation, earned consistent five-star reviews, and brought clients back to us remains the standard for The Luminaire Collective.

I am also proud of the word “Collective.” This company brings together chefs, planners, coordinators, designers, bartenders, entertainers, photographers, performers, and other creative professionals beneath one shared vision. It allows us to match each client with the right talent while giving them one company they can trust throughout the process.

What I want readers to know is that our work can begin anywhere. It may begin with a private dinner, a menu, a wedding, a milestone, or simply an idea that someone does not yet know how to execute. From there, we can create as much or as little of the experience as the client needs.

The scale may change, but the care never does.

Mad Mushroom Meals will always bring people to the table. The Luminaire Collective ensures that everything surrounding that table feels just as meaningful.

Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
If there is one thing I would like to leave with our readers, it is this: do not be afraid to let your dream become larger than the version you first imagined.

Mad Mushroom Meals began with my love for food and a desire to care for people through something I created with my own hands. I could not have known then how many doors that passion would open, how many people would trust us with their most meaningful moments, or how much I would grow while building it.

The creation of The Luminaire Collective does not mean Mad Mushroom Meals outgrew its roots. It means those roots became strong enough to support something even greater. Food will always be my passion and the heart of our work. Now, we also have the ability to create everything surrounding the table—the atmosphere, the beauty, the entertainment, the hospitality, and the memories guests carry home.

I am deeply grateful to every client who trusted us before the vision was fully formed, every creative professional who brought their gifts into the Collective, and every person who recommended our name, returned for another celebration, or allowed us to become part of their family’s story. I am especially grateful for Jonathan, whose support, creativity, and belief in what we could become helped me understand that I did not have to carry the entire dream alone.

To anyone building something of their own, your first idea does not have to be your final form. You are allowed to evolve. You are allowed to discover new gifts within yourself. You are allowed to ask for help, take up more space, and build something that holds every part of who you are.

We are still growing, still learning, and still dreaming far beyond what already exists. Our vision is to make The Luminaire Collective one of Florida’s leading full-service event production companies without ever losing the care, flavor, and personal connection that began with Mad Mushroom Meals.

We may now be able to build the entire world around an occasion, but our purpose remains beautifully simple: to bring people together, make them feel cared for, and create moments they will carry with them long after the table has been cleared.
