Conversations with Flora Torra

Today we’d like to introduce you to Flora Torra.

Hi Flora, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My heartfelt mission from my youth was to make the lives of children a little easier by entering their world. I started out as a teacher for kids with learning disabilities. But that wasn’t enough so I went to graduate school to become a school psychologist, and that wasn’t enough. So I earned my license to enter the private practice field while working in the schools. That wasn’t enough, so I kept getting trained in various modes of therapy like play therapy, Sandplay therapy, Somatic Experiencing, Transforming Touch, EMDR and IFS. Although I was tenured in the Florida school system, I continue to work as an independent contractor with a psychiatrist in WP and a clinical psychologist in WG doing testing and therapy for children and adolescents of all ages. I specialize in anxiety, trauma, ADHD, divorce, and autism. I love what I do and continue to learn new approaches and deepen the ones that I use in my practice.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Managing the private practice has always had its struggles and obstacles. For example, whether to spend money to advertise or use word of mouth, and whether to join insurance companies which I have not done. I wasn’t sure whether to get my Ph.D. and instead I chose to spend the money on trainings.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I see mostly children and adolescents. That sets me apart, since most therapists work with adults.

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
I would advice them to decide early if they want to work in the schools or in private practice where they have more freedom and can design their practice to suit their needs. Then, to decide if they want to do assessments or therapy or both.
