Today we’d like to introduce you to Nneamaka Nwosisi.
Hi Nneamaka , so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My journey into entrepreneurship started in 2011 with an idea, a love for creativity, and a desire to build something meaningful in Nigeria. Mak Nisy began very simply—our first production happened on my front porch, making bags with a small team and a lot of determination.
Over the last 15 years, that small beginning has grown into a fashion and leather-goods manufacturing company producing handbags, travel and corporate bags, accessories and other lifestyle products. We have built a team, worked with corporate and government clients, and taken our products beyond Nigeria into international markets.
The journey has come with challenges, learning, reinvention and many moments of starting again, but I have remained committed to one vision: proving that beautiful, well-made products can be designed and manufactured in Africa and compete anywhere in the world.
Today, I’m proud not only of what Mak Nisy has become, but of the people we employ, train and empower along the way. Fifteen years later, I still feel like we are only getting started.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Building a manufacturing business in Nigeria comes with very real challenges, from access to finance and reliable infrastructure to sourcing quality materials, finding and retaining skilled workers, and navigating an unpredictable business environment.
There have also been seasons when I have had to balance entrepreneurship with being a wife and mother, while dealing with major personal and family challenges behind the scenes.
But every difficult season has taught me how to adapt, build better systems and keep moving. I have learned that entrepreneurship isn’t about avoiding challenges; it’s about developing the resilience to keep building despite them. Fifteen years later, I think that resilience has become one of our greatest strengths.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Mak Nisy Fashion House?
Mak Nisy is a Nigerian fashion and leather-goods manufacturing brand specializing in beautifully crafted handbags, travel and laptop bags, accessories, footwear and corporate gifting. We combine leather and African textiles with contemporary design to create pieces that are functional, distinctive and proudly made in Nigeria.
What sets us apart is that we are not just selling fashion, we actually manufacture. We have spent 15 years developing local skills, training artisans and building production capacity while showing that African-made products can meet international standards.
I’m especially proud of the impact behind the brand: the jobs we have created, the people we have trained, and the opportunity to take Nigerian craftsmanship into markets beyond our borders.
When someone carries a Mak Nisy piece, I want them to see more than a beautiful product. I want them to see the creativity, craftsmanship and possibilities coming out of Africa.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
Something that surprises people is that I didn’t actually study fashion. My first degree is in Estate Management, and I later earned a Master’s in Social Work from the University of Bristol in the UK.
Fashion and manufacturing came from a completely different place, creativity, curiosity and entrepreneurship. I essentially learned by doing, building Mak Nisy from the ground up over the last 15 years.
I think that unconventional background has actually shaped the way I lead. Social work taught me a lot about people, and entrepreneurship taught me that sometimes your purpose doesn’t arrive through the path you originally planned.
