Today we’d like to introduce you to Melissa Parker.
Hi Melissa, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My heart has always been for service; I am the oldest of six kids from a military family, a Registered Nurse, and a business owner. My husband Ted and I live along the beautiful East Coast of Florida along with our two children, Brendan and Carson. My gift is bringing people together, and I believe our God-given talents and gifts create meaningful opportunities for people of all abilities and backgrounds to connect. That belief is the heart behind The Parker Foundation for Autism and Child Development; the nonprofit my husband and I founded over 10 years ago to support children and families impacted by autism and special needs after our son was diagnosed with autism at the age of 4. We wanted all children to have the opportunity to be a part of a team and to have the opportunity to reach their greatest potential. Our hope is that special needs families feel included and understood in their communities. That is what we are building through our work with The Parker Foundation.
I strive to inspire women of all ages to step into their greatness with confidence, resilience, and purpose by reminding them that their struggles can become the very foundation of their strength. This past August, I won the National title of Mrs. USA ICON 2026. The USA ICON pillars of intelligence, confidence, optimism and nobility align with my purpose and values; with this platform I hope to educate and inspire communities nationwide to create adaptive, inclusive programs for individuals of all abilities, and to empower women of all ages to step into their purpose and use their voice to make a positive impact for a cause close to their hearts.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Starting a nonprofit is a labor of love; it pushed me in many ways – to become comfortable with networking in my community, to build partnerships for our programs, to fundraise to be able to provide fully funded programs at no cost to the families we serve. I was asked to do interviews and to speak on my experience as a mother of a child with autism, and to share about our nonprofit and mission at public events and fundraisers. I quickly became a community leader, which was both wonderful and scary, as I was also raising two young children and navigating the world of autism, education, safety, medical needs and therapies for our son. I learned to speak from my heart to overcome a fear of public speaking – my passion to help my son and others was bigger than my fears.
The fact that we built our nonprofit around our family’s needs helped me through most of the challenges. Building a community of understanding, kindness and support. That is what we needed, that is what we created. It healed me and helped me grow while helping others do the same. Building the connections I needed, while growing opportunities to help others.
We’ve been impressed with The Parker Foundation for Autism and Child Development, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Our mission is to use education, sports and the arts as avenues to enrich the lives of and bridge the gap between children, teens and young adults with autism spectrum disorders, special needs, their families and the community in which we live.
Our programs include Speak Through Sports, Speak Through Arts, and Speak Through Education. This includes our Be a Buddy initiative, Swimming on the Spectrum, and our Hey, Mama! Retreats.
All of our programs are free for families and our communities!
We have served Brevard County, Florida since 2015. We work to connect with existing resources to help provide a variety of free resources for families; these opportunities can be tapped in to anywhere across the United States for very little funding, thanks to volunteers and Buddy teams!
I am proud that we have been so successful in our community and for the love and support we have received over the past decade. The impact we make for children and families is clear – from the child walking on to the baseball field for the first time when their parents didn’t think it was possible, to the student volunteer Buddies learning the power of kindness and connection with peers of different abilities. It is my honor to help build these connections and opportunities; it fills my heart with joy.
We are celebrating our 9th Annual Be a Buddy 5K Race and Family Health and Fitness Expo on October 17th, 2026. We unveil our giant Unity Banner and take the Be a Buddy Pledge. It is a celebration of our community coming together for kindness and inclusion for individuals of all abilities.
This past May, we held our Love All Gala in conjunction with the 2026 Revolution Technologies Pro Tennis Classic, a weeklong women’s W100 ITF Women’s World Tennis Tournament. Brevard County rallied around Kiwi Racquet and Fitness Club in Indian Harbour Beach, FL to help support this world class tennis event, and enjoyed the Love All Gala to kick off the week and benefit the Parker Foundation. Sheriff Wayne Ivey was our Emcee and Live Auction Gala Host!
Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
My happiest childhood memories are those when I was outside exploring and having fun with my siblings and friends. Riding bikes, climbing trees, playing sports, and being a part of a team.
