Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy Teumer.
Hi Amy, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I am a Florida native and grew up in the Central Florida area. My interest in mental health started early on in my life when I was in high school and I struggled with my own symptoms of anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem. I was fortunate enough to seek out a mental health counselor and soon learned about the amazing benefits of counseling! During my senior year, I took an AP Psychology class that further deepened my passion for psychology and mental health. I went on to receive a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology from the University of Central Florida and then obtained a Master of Science Degree in Mental Health Counseling from Nova Southeastern University. After two years of post-graduate clinical supervision, I became a Licensed Mental Health Counselor. I am currently working on my Perinatal Mental Health Certification as well, which will provide me with an additional specialty in Perinatal Mental Health. Assisting women in the pregnancy and postpartum period has become a strong passion of mine after going through this process with my two daughters.
I have worked in the mental health and counseling profession for 15 years. I have had the honor to help individuals of all ages in multiple treatment settings including, community counseling, therapeutic schools, day treatment programs, adolescent and adult residential facilities, and psychiatric clinics. In 2011, I decided to open my own private practice and have since become well established in the Central Florida community. I am grateful to be a trusted referral for many providers in the area and value promoting mental health awareness. Offering Telehealth Counseling allows me to serve clients throughout the entire state of Florida and has added convenience and increased access to my services. My goal is to reduce the barriers to mental health treatment as much as possible.
I am an interactive, strength-focused counselor. My therapeutic approach has a strong foundation in cognitive behavioral therapy and mindfulness training. By providing practical feedback and individualized interventions, I help my clients effectively address both personal life challenges and mental health symptoms that are holding them back from living a more fulfilling life. I integrate complementary methodologies and techniques to offer a highly personalized approach tailored to each individual. With compassion and understanding, I work with clients to help them build on their strengths and attain the personal growth they are committed to accomplishing. It is truly a privilege to walk alongside my clients and watch their motivation and self-awareness develop as we work together to help them achieve a more meaningful and joyful life. Personally, I am a self-care enthusiast and enjoy staying active, being outdoors and spending time with my husband and two daughters.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Making the leap to step out on my own and open my private practice was definitely a risk at first. However, the risk has absolutely paid off, as I am now able to run my own business, provide access to counseling for clients all over the state of Florida, and still have time for myself and my family. Finding a healthy work/life balance as a counselor can be a challenge. I have learned over the years how important it is to be intentional with my own self-care! Owning my own private practice has allowed me to find a schedule and balance that works best for me.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor located in Orlando, Florida. I offer mental health counseling services to include individual, couples and family counseling. Clients can access my services through a secure and convenient Telehealth platform. I have been in the counseling profession for 15 years and have owned and operated my own private practice since 2011. I specialize in anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, and interpersonal relationship issues. I collaborate with providers in the community to ensure mental health awareness and access to mental health services.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
During my graduate and post-graduate experience, I worked closely with a clinical supervisor as I developed my knowledge, experience and clinical skills. Since then, I have continued to value ongoing supervision, mentorship, support and networking with other counselors, as I am always learning and growing as a counselor. This is why I am active in multiple networking and consultation groups both locally and worldwide. I also work with my own counselor to address any challenges both personally and professionally that may arise so I can be fully present for my clients.
