Today we’d like to introduce you to Janelle and Jonathan Warehaus.
Janelle and Jonathan, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
We both began with a love of restoring mid-century furniture, growing our knowledge in how to best preserve these unique, special furniture pieces and send them off to new forever homes. The business has been ten years in the making, most of which was a passion project while working full-time corporate jobs. We have worked at every level of our business and continue to grow because of our amazing community support. Starting in our driveway, to two different un-airconditioned warehouse workshops, and finally, our now brick + mortar home in College Park. A place we once dreamed of that allows us to share creative space with local small business makers/artisans and provide a platform for growth within our community now exists and we couldn’t be more excited. We are still changing, evolving and there is so much more to come! We are so grateful to be here and can’t wait to continue to grow in this amazing community!!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road is never without bumps and hurdles. The financial strain that comes with growing pains are always stressful. Having to be brave in supporting your own vision when there are so many obstacles is no easy task (especially during a global pandemic). Knowing when to take the leap with both feet or not knowing for that matter. Doubting your ability and timing. Deciding when and how to invest in opportunities when you are tight in all areas of life. We did not have a guide, so we have made our mistakes, learned from them, made some more, and have had to go back to square one many times. It’s all a risk, and for people who are not risk-takers, it makes those moments seem like it’s make it or brake it. Working with a spouse takes some real patience and perspective, too, as we both have to give each other that trust and know when to step in when the other is burnt out. There’s a lot of balancing going on, especially when you add in your personal life, kids, relationships, etc!! The struggle is not without reward and that is what you tell yourself everyday. Never lose faith.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We specialize in vintage home furnishings and decor with a focus on sustainability and open-ended creativity. We source, create, repair, restore pieces of furniture, art and quality goods from decades past, giving them new life and new forever homes to be enjoyed for generations to come. We hope our space allows for people to feel things! Things that speak to them, things with a soul, things that have stories. That includes the platform we share with our local community of creatives who we invite to grow within our space. Our brand has many layers, but most important is that it’s more than a store, it’s a state of mind. It’s a warmth that we share with all of those who enter. We provide, as a company, many different offerings, carefully curated vintage goods, restoration services, sustainable home goods, a platform for local talent to share their creations via our markets, a place to come and overall just enjoy the vibes!
How do you think about happiness?
Happy is a way of life. Choosing to see the good before the bad and living in that feeling. Love makes us happy, our child, our belief in the good and the good people around us (and of course finding the best vintage goods we can!).
