Today we’d like to introduce you to Shannon Lazic.
Hi Shannon, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Blair and I met in design school. We had both gone to college before, graduated, had different careers, and both felt the need to do something more creative with our careers. After we graduated from design school, we worked for a large design firm here in Orlando for many years. Finally, we decided to try it out on our own. We grew our business by really focusing on building relationships with people in our industry; builders, architects, vendors, etc. We’ve learned that by cultivating these relationships, we not only grow the business, but we learn so much more about all the different aspects of our work, which ultimately makes us better at our jobs.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
We have had to deal with the struggles that most business owners go through, but we’ve been lucky. The hardest part for both of us is balancing running a business and being parents. As everyone knows, owning a business is a 24-hour job… and so it parenting. It was sometimes hard when the kids were little to balance both.
We’ve been impressed with Steele Street Studios, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We are a small boutique design firm that specializes in high-end residential design. We try to think of every project like it was our own house. We value the trust clients invest in us and their homes and really try to understand the client in order to make their house the dream home they are wanting. We always want a home to stand the test of time. I think this is what we are most proud of in terms of our brand. Like our design aesthetic, we want our brand to feel timeless so we don’t always stick to one style. We want to be innovative but also cognizant of fading trends.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
I don’t think there is only one characteristic. I think one of the most important is having confidence. With design, there is no absolute right or wrong. So in order for our clients to place trust in us, we have to be confident because if we are unsure, then they are unsure. Another important characteristic is good communication. These days so much of how we communicate is via email or text. Sometimes it’s hard to understand a tone or direction from an email, so I think it’s really important to be able to communicate with a client effectively.
