Inspiring Conversations with Johnny Alamillo of The Roots and Stones

Today we’d like to introduce you to Johnny Alamillo.

Hi Johnny, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I moved to Orlando in 2008 with the intention to go to Full Sail for Graphic Design. I used to be heavy into graphics and crazy abstract/manipulation with photoshop. December 2010, I bought a camera to create my own content rather than steal someone else’s property. The rest is history. I started as a band photographer, dabbled in Model Photography and for the past six years, I’ve been shooting mostly wedding/portrait photography.

Shooting weddings really got me inspired to capture way more emotion than photos can, so two years ago, I began my film journey. So now I offer both photo & video services. I also do media for a cigar subscription company by the name of Privada Cigar Club. If you find their YouTube, you’ll find everything I’ve created for them. They are from Orlando, FL and growing to be one of the giants in the cigar subscription community and I’m helping make that happen with my craft.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It hasn’t. I worked full time throughout my entire photography career, so it was really hard to try and juggle both. I would say that this career requires a lot of time to build content and clientele. Also, having major responsibilities like affording to pay your bills makes the leap a little harder, especially when you get used to having a job with a salary and benefits.

Also, doubt plays a lot in your head when you’re trying to make it in this business. The rise of social media not only helped us but it really plagues your mind with comparison. It’s wild. Now I shoot for myself and my clientele. I don’t worry about impressing my peers.

As of March 8th (impeccable timing) 2020, I now do Photography and Videography full time. I am the happiest I’ve ever been.

We’ve been impressed with The Roots and Stones, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
So I really enjoy pulling on people’s heartstrings (lol) and I love movie trailers so a lot of my wedding videos have really emotional/dramatic tones to it. I don’t do any crazy editing but just rely on good compositions, cuts, and fitting music. I have a really good ear for the right track and it takes me HOURS or even DAYS to find the right track and it just fits perfectly. That’s commitment, lol.

Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
I have a terrible attention span and I wish I could shut my mind up and read a book. I honestly do. I mostly just get inspired by what I see on an everyday basis and I try to recreate that. Always been a heavy movie buff so that’s helped too. As far as life. Hang out with people you aspire to be like. It’s contagious. It motivates you to be better every day.
