Today we’d like to introduce you to Jhanea Epps.
Jhanea, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’ve always knew I would be a business owner/entrepreneur. Since high school, I was always doing all my friend’s makeup & eyebrows lol. Last year in 2020, I was working at a job that was so mentally draining and I really needed an escape out. Then boom, quarantine came and I was so happy, I knew that I could take that time to focus on myself and get things done that I couldn’t before. I can truly say that quarantine changed my life. During lockdown, my job at the time did not provide any pay for us, so I was left with figuring out how am I going to pay my bills.
For two months me and my boyfriend hustled, learning how to sew so we could make custom face mask to sell. Selling those mask helped us make enough money to support ourselves for those two months until I had to return back to work. Going through this really opened my eyes and made me realize if I could find a way to get things done in the middle of a pandemic with no money, then I could honestly do anything… this really gave me the courage to have faith and start my business. On July 13th, 2021, it will be one year since I have opened Neamua Beauty and I couldn’t be any more proud of myself.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It’s definitely not easy being a business owner. There’s so much you have to learn and figure out on the way. Everything is up to you, you are literally in control of all of your finances, taking care of your business, promoting, scheduling, etc. In the beginning, I had many breakdowns and times where I thought to myself, what the hell am I doing. I’m an introvert, so the hardest thing for me was having to communicate with so many people I’ve never met before and handling those situations that usually a manager would handle at an ordinary job.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a licensed esthetician. I specialize in Brows/Brow tinting & full body waxing. I’m mainly known for my eyebrow work, I absolutely love slaying brows. Tinting is my most popular service and I’ve been told many times that the way I tint brows is what sets me apart from my competition. I’m very proud of how far I have come. When I first started my business, I had a whole different vision, mainly because of where I worked previously. I didn’t have much confidence in my brow work even though brows were my passion. It is now my most booked services and I am just so proud of my progress and my confidence over the past few months. I am now able to continue to move forward in the direction of my passion instead of just settling.
Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I say go for it lol if you can’t take risk, then being an entrepreneur isn’t for you. Being a business owner is all about taking risk. I took a risk by quitting my job in the middle of a pandemic with no money, no backup plan… to follow my heart and start my business and I can tell you now it was the best thing that I could have ever done for myself. When I finally took a risk and just put trust in myself, in God, in the universe. I was rewarded. Yes, I’m still within my first year so I still have much to learn and go through but I couldn’t be any happier. Trust yourself, trust your heart and just have faith in your process.
