Today we’d like to introduce you to Reya Smith.
Hi Reya, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Crocheting started recently, actually. I was working at a job that only allowed us to bring nonelectrical items to work. I saw this woman making a blanket and decided to pick up a new hobby. I went on YouTube and studied. I started with blankets and hats, and scarves. Then I found out I could make anything I wanted with yarn, and it will last longer and be customizable.
Ever since I can remember, I have always wanted colorful hair. I felt it was a good way to express how you feel. Bright colors make you happy; dark colors make you sad. My mother never let me color my hair until I was 16, so as soon as I turned 16, I got a washable rainbow on the tips of my hair. Fast forward to the present, and ColourfulCrochetVibez is created. I still feel that color makes such an impact in our lives. For example, would you paint your living room bright yellow? Most people have a neutral color living room like tan or brown because that is a comforting color; it helps us relax when presented with it. The same as wearing colors! ColourfulCrochetVibez is all about being colorful and bold and expressing who you are the way you want!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Starting up a business is not easy when you are trying to compete with other big companies. I was trying to compete in the beginning because I thought no one would buy my products. However, I have changed my mindset to know that people who appreciate the quality of work and building relationships rather than just being a number will be the people I aim for. Crocheting a purse takes about 4-5 hours, and crocheting a top can take anywhere from 3-10 hours, depending on the kind of yarn and style. So time management became a challenge because I wanted to crochet all day to get a piece finished.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Crocheting purses, clothing, and hair accessories are what I mainly sell; however, if I do get a request that I can fulfill, I will. I am most proud of my Africa wall piece because it was a new stepping stone for something new to learn. I tend to make more wall pieces in the future. Creating pieces that make people feel bold is the goal.
