Today we’d like to introduce you to Mike and Nikki Garcia.
Hi Mike and Nikki, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
We are a husband and wife team, Mike and Nikki Garcia. Once we got married, we started getting more into food and the source of it. We started backyard gardening shortly after and it truly blossomed from there. Connecting with like-minded friends and farmers alike.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
With anything, there is always hurtles. Each season we learn new lessons and adapt from there. Working together is an absolute blessing but for sure, it comes with challenges. It doesn’t matter if it’s your business partner or your wife- somedays it’s just off. We’ve had a few crop failures since we started Everoak. Carrots seem to hate it here, sadly! Cauliflower didn’t want to grow second season. We’ve since done full soil testing and are able to fully see why. What’s lacking, what’s needed. There is no telling nature what to do. As farmers, we need to work with it and listen.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Everoak Farm?
We are a family-run, bio-intensive market garden. We also raise chickens, keep bees, and have a peach orchard. We cater to local restaurants, have a Sunday farm stand and offer a CSA. Our CSA (community-supported agriculture) goes from fall-spring. Broken up into three seasons for 12 weeks. Starting the CSA has been a great way to get to the local community with our food. It builds connections to our members and does truly give us pride in being able to help feed people.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
Just go for it. Be patient, humble and know that you will have failures and that is okay. Don’t take things too seriously. Ask for help and don’t be afraid to.
