Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexa Delgado.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My beverage journey began back in 2013. I read in article in “Women’s Health” or Cosmo, I don’t remember which, but it described a woman that cofounded a brewery in California. She spoke at length about the lack of diversity in the beverage industry, specifically regarding the role women play.
After doing a bit a research, I realized that there was in fact, little to no female representation in beer, or wine or spirits, for that matter, so I decided then that I wanted to forge myself a career in the industry. Seven years later, I still keep that article in my wallet as a reminder of my goals and my mission. I graduated with my Masters in Management in Food & Beverage in 2015 and started with the Ritz Carlton Hotel Company in 2016. I have been fortunate enough to represent the brand at events such as Cayman Cookout and Tales of the Cocktail; along the way, I’ve made some incredible connections and friends that help push me to improve my craft everyday.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Like everyone, my road has been paved with a few obstacles. Most recently, I think we’ve all seen and felt the effects of COVID on the service industry. Being young and a female has also come with its challenges; however, I’ve been fortunate enough to have incredible mentors who have always been there with support or opportunities. I’m grateful for my support system because without them, I wouldn’t be where I am today.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I have always called myself a bartender by trade. My role, at the end of the day, is to make sure the person on the other side of the bar satisfied with their experience. If I can serve them something they love or something new in the process, it’s even better! I love being able to talk to guests and learn their story and craft them something that’s unique to them. This makes it more personal and creates something that they could only have sitting at my bar.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I don’t believe in luck. I think we all are responsible for our actions, and we all need to take control of our lives. Like William Ernest Henry said, “I am the captain of my soul.” If I don’t like the situation I’m in, I’ll go out and manifest a new opportunity for myself.
