Daily Inspiration: Meet Taylor Attebery

Today we’d like to introduce you to Taylor Attebery.

Hi Taylor, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Growing up one could always find me with camera in hand, wondering off on vacations, trying to find that unique perspective to capture. Later, in my mid-twenties, it was the fall of 2016, when I made the decision to go back to school and study photography. I spent the next 4 years developing my skills and in May of 2020 I graduated with my B.S. in photography from the University of Central Florida. The courses I took, from editorial to business, helped prepare me for life outside the classroom and into the entrepreneurial world of owning my own freelance photography business. Now I have the pleasure of working with beautiful people, capturing their memories for a lifetime to treasure.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
While attending school I had to balance working a part time job and commuting to and from school, which was a good hour and a half drive one way. I found prioritizing my studies was crucial and as long as I knew my end goal, to graduate and start my own business, I was able to keep my head down and work hard.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
My favorite is portrait work, from seniors, families, or just a fun day out at a park, I love capturing personalities. Over the past year or so I have been working on a passion project, titled Being, where I have been going around photographing different people who identity as transgender. The goal of this series is to show that we, I say we because I am also transgender, are here, we exist, and we are beautiful. So far I have 15 individuals whom I have photographed, I have them choose a location important to them, could be their home, a coffee shop, anywhere they feel confident. From there whoever I am working with and I will shoot and talk about anything and everything, I want to really see the person I am photographing, so talking and getting to know one another is crucial. For the next hour I do my best to get those genuine laughs and have had a lot of positive feedback from these individuals that my goal has been achieved. I have even had a couple of these images shown at the Orlando Museum of Art, as well as the Southeast Center for Photography, which made me feel very honored and proud. Ultimately this series will be turned into a book, if you would like to see some of this work please go to my website www.taylorattebery.com/personalwork#/being/

The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
The COVID-19 crisis taught me that, photography will always be there and will continue to influence the world through whoever is on the other side of the camera.
