Today we’d like to introduce you to Shaina Ofstein.
Hi Shaina, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My story starts like many other artists and photographers! I took a random elective in high school and ended up falling in love with the craft. Although it took me a few years to really dive in to photography, once that shutter bug bit me, I never went back! I was a cast member at the “Most Magical Place on Earth” and was taking photos of the parades and entertainment, when one day, a friend of mine asked me if I could take his headshots. I thought “how hard could that be?” From there it was just a domino effect of trying more and more shoots and a different variety of styles and locations. In 2016 I shot my first wedding, In 2018 I had some photos purchased by Coca Cola! In 2020 I decided to go full time with my business, and in 2021 I was published in 2 different local, but highly esteemed wedding blogs for a styled shoot that I had come up with.
Obviously accolades like those are what makes up a tangible road map of my journey. However- what those monumental moments won’t tell you is the growth I have experienced through this business because of the people who have allowed me the opportunity to capture all the milestones in their own lives. From babies, to weddings, to proposals, and family reunions. And even to the harder times, a final photoshoot with a furry loved one who was getting ready to go across the rainbow bridge, or the 200+ Cast Members that were affected by the layoffs from COVID-19 in the fall of 2020. It truly is an honor and a privilege to have been witness to so many of life’s astounding moments.
So I guess to make the long story short- you could say I started off as a curious artist with my head in the clouds, excited to try something new. As far as where I am today- I’d like to think that I am a storyteller, helping my clients capture their own experiences so they can continue to share their own story for years to come.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
If the road was smooth- it wouldn’t be as fun of an adventure. Besides the little bit of Photoshop I learned in High School- I am actually completely self-taught! And that in itself was a challenge! I still feel as if there is always more to learn about photography, editing, business practices, etc.
On the technical aspect of photography- learning how to use basically what is a handheld computer was definitely one of the biggest hurdles to get past. I watched countless YouTube videos, read a few books and practiced as much as I could. Shooting on Manual mode now versus Auto almost comes second nature- sort of like riding a bike! Even if some time passes, the basic skills are so engrained in my head from all that information, however, cameras continue to get more and more advanced. The learning will never end- but that to me is exciting!
The backside of business has been one of my most recent struggles since going Full Time. Trying to be your own social media manager, accountant, secretary, book keeper, marketing manager, editor and photographer can really take a toll. I was never educated in the financial side of business, so again- I am learning! But mistakes have been made, and will probably continue to happen- the most important thing is to learn and grow when they do.
Lastly, and a little more personal- I have really struggled with the “imposter syndrome.” Essentially- although I am confident in my skills and knowledge I have obtained so far, as well as my business practices- I sometimes get the overwhelming feeling of “why would anyone book me?” or “am I even good enough to charge people?” and “I feel like a fraud.” I have talked to many other small business owners and creatives and have felt some solidarity in this emotion. Luckily, I have a village of people around me who remind me of my worth even when I forget just how far I have come!
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I like to call myself a “Milestone Photographer.” I specialize in capturing all of life’s special moments- from the big ones like weddings and graduations to even the smaller ones like birthdays! I would like to think I am most known for my uniquely themed mini sessions! Every year I have done mini sessions with Powder Paint!
What set’s me a part for others is my eclectic experiences that allow me to connect with all sorts of people! It took me a few different career choices and experiences to finally chase this dream business of mine. From YEARS of hospitality and guest service, to childcare, to direct sales, and even to esthetics- I can find common ground with most every person I meet. This allows for me to ensure my clients feel as comfortable as possible in front of my camera!
“What am I most proud of?” Is a difficult question to answer. I am proud of the connections I have made with hundreds of people from all walks of life. I am proud every single time I get a new inquiry from a brand new client, as well as when one of my regular clients reaches out to me. I am proud of the moments when a client responds with just how happy they are with the end result. I am proud of the moments I have been able to capture for years to come. I guess overall, I am just proud of myself, my business, my journey and my future.
What does success mean to you?
I think defining success is really subjective, and it’s not just “one” thing. For me success is defined in the connections I make, the professional relationships I build, the moment where I hit a financial or personal goal. Success is growth, learning and development.
