Today we’d like to introduce you to Derrick Collins.
Hi Derrick, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself
I’ve been in the social service field for over 10 years working in different populations. I created the mentor program when I was in my internship at a residential program dealing with at risk offenders. Once I graduated, it transformed into a community program for at risk youth. I have a bachelors in education and a masters in social work.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It has been a struggle keeping up with the demand and need of the program. Having the right people on your team makes a difference.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
We are a non for profit tax exempt organization, and collect donations and sponsors from local and corporate companies. We mentor at risk youth in the under privileged areas of volusia county. We have primarily focused on the middle school aged youth, exposing them to new and unique opportunities to expand their mindset. We provide a safe environment to build their social skills with others.
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
The social service industry continues to grow with the need of support for the inner community. It will only continue to become more of a demand.
